The online share of Sweden's total gambling market stands at 26 per cent, the highest in Europe, a new study which is about to be released has found.

Online Gambling Needs Recognition

The study was conducted by the Stockholm-based Research Institute of Industrial Economics, and was to be submitted this week to the Swedish government with the added piece of advice that the government should formally recognize the online gaming sector as contributing to Swedish economic success.

Sweden Comes to Grips with Gambling

Sweden has always had a troubled relationship with e-gaming, and has been one of the countries most criticized by the European Union for its state gaming monopoly and its failure to come into line with EU laws on loosening cross-border restrictions on online gaming operators. At present all gambling still remains under the full control of the Swedish state and the relevant authorities.

These issues will no doubt be raised when the capital Stockholm hosts the Third Annual I-Gaming Forum from April 11-13. The primary purpose of the conference will be to examine taxation and regulatory in the Swedish and Scandinavian online casino markets.
