When Gambling's Not Just for Fun

When Gambling's Not Just for FunHelp is at hand.

For many people placing a sports wager or spending time at an online casino is a safe, fun activity. It can be a pleasant way to spend an hour or two, chat to other online gaming fans and even, for the lucky few, lead to a life-changing win!

A Hard Habit to Break

However, for some, gambling can become a habit that is hard to break. It can become an addictive need rather than a fun pastime.

Problem Gambling Awareness Week

March 6-12, 2011 is Problem Gambling Awareness Week across the US. This awareness and outreach campaign promotes programs andservices to assist problem gamblers and their families.

Problem Gambling Awareness Week

According to the organizers, The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), 6-9 million US gamblers have a problem yet only a small fraction actually seek out treatment.

What to Watch out for

If you're not sure if you have a problem, why not take the Gamblers Anonymous Self Check Quiz. Alternatively, an affirmative answer to the questions below indicates that gambling is more than just a hobby.
  • Gambling in secret: If you lie to loved ones about the amount of time you spend gambling or the amount of money you wager.
  • Feeling compelled to continue whether you are on a winning or losing streak.
  • Wagering more than you can afford - perhaps in a desperate attempt to recoup your losses.

Where to Find Help

The first step to addressing gambling addiction is to acknowledge that you have a problem. The second step is to get help.

Gamblers Anonymous' international directory lists state-by-state programs that are available to help US players who want to regain control of their gambling.

Other tactics to try include:
  • Use self-help books, e-courses or counseling to help you tackle your addiction
  • Talk to debt advisor - it's hard to move on without addressing your financial situation.
  • Tell selected family and friends so that they can help you.
  • Replacing gambling with another activity - keep busy!

Millions of people across the globe gamble safely, for enjoyment. However, if gambling ceases to be fun, it's time to seek help.
