60 Minutes Addresses Online Casino
Adjust font size:
The program examined the different aspects of the internet gaming phenomenon and the development of online casino operations despite the ambiguous U.S. legislative and regulatory environment in which they operate.
The program also included interviews with well known operators Nigel Payne of SportingBet, Steve Lipscomb of World Poker Tour Enterprises and Terry Lanni of MGM Mirage. U.S. Senator Jon Kyl, a long time opponent of the industry, also appeared on the show, outlining his reasons for seeking to have online gambling banned in the U.S. Kyl has been behind two failed attempts to have legislation against the industry passed by the U.S. Senate. The program concluded with closing statements from SportingBet´s Nigel Payne, who stated that U.S. authorities should regulate the industry to ensure that only socially responsible companies are able to operate in the market. Payne also pointed out that gambling has existed since the dawn of time. He believes that the responsible thing to do is to regulate it to gain greater control over it. |
For those members of the public who have never played at online casinos, the gaming industry can appear to be something unknown and complicated. A recent 60 Minutes Special on the industry has done much to dispel the myth that the sites are illegitimate and dishonest businesses.
