PokerStars, the world's largest online poker site, has smashed the Guinness world record for largest online poker tournament.

Thirty-five thousand players competed in the $11 buy-in tournament on Sunday, with the action lasting over nine-and-a-half hours and resulting in a payout for a record 8,750 players from a total prize pool of $500,000, or a quarter of all those involved.

"No other site brings the level of excitement, skill, and challenge that poker players crave," said Team PokerStars professional Daniel Negreanu. "The Sunday tournaments on PokerStars provide an unrivaled opportunity to prove your poker prowess with a lucrative prize pool that matches the highest level of competition."

The achievement broke the old record, also set by PokerStars with the Sunday Hundred Grand tournament on July 29, 2007, in which 20,000 players competed.

PokerStars broke another world record in the process, with around 250,000 people logged on at the same time to witness the event.
