It has been used for everything from protesting against the dictatorship in Iran to campaigning in the UK elections, but now Twitter is finding another use with the new Tweet for Poker campaign.

Under the new initiative, launched by the Poker Players Alliance, American poker players are being urged to send a tweet to their member of the US Congress.

A map of the United States containing the latest tweets from all across the country can be accessed at Tweet for Poker.

The thousands of messages being sent to local members urge them to protect the right to play poker and to back legislation to overturn the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was implemented on July 1, 2010, and effectively banned online gambling in the US by outlawing the transfer of funds from financial institutions to online gambling sites.

Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act, or HR2267, is one of the pieces of legislation being pushed by pro-gambling advocates across the length and width of the country, along with New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez's S1597, the Internet Poker and Game of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act of 2009.
