One innovative Las Vegas casino is already planning for the legalization of poker in the United States, launching a free online poker room tied to its VIP program for loyal customers.

Free Online Poker

South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa was set to launch the free online poker website for members of its casino loyalty program, and on October 17 for the rest of the gambling community, owner Michael Gaughan said.

The Associated Press reported Gaughan as saying the site is a first step in beating the pack if federal or Nevada state legislators rule that casinos can operate internet poker. Current federal laws preventing the transfer of funds to gaming sites effectively prohibit such poker rooms from operating.

MGM moves to social gaming

Meanwhile, rival Vegas company MGM Resorts International says it is moving into social gaming in an effort to attract more gamblers to its casinos.

CEO Jim Murren said at a Vegas casino industry conference Wednesday that the company expects to make an announcement soon. Although Murren was not specific, he said it would be based somewhat on Zynga's FarmVille, and would allow players to pretend they are casino moguls.
