Poker Tournament for Social Change
As countries all around the globe shake to the effects of gambling, a unique fundraiser smiles back at their fears, by presenting the positive side of poker. Although the idea of legalizing gambling is typically followed by threats of an environment of prostitutes, drugs and gang-violence, the High Sierra Diamonds 95 girls fast-pitch softball team is using this "evil" game for positive results. On March 21st, participants will enjoy a dinner and check-in at Wild-Creek Golf Course in Sparks, Texas, in order to be a part of the fundraising poker tournament. Tickets for the event are as low as $100 and cash prizes will be given to the final three players of the tournament. As police break into private poker games in Hawaii and armed robberies are taking place in Texas and Florida, this is a case that presents how some have actually found a way to reverse the trend. Observers of the war on gambling will see nothing other than a losing battle, but on this day in March the community will take an addictive drug and show us how we can improve society by using it. Many are asking if having such an event may promote illegal poker games causing more addictions and violent behaviors throughout society. With the help of a just legal system, we may be able to bend our laws a bit in order to create a balanced world with poker as a tool, as opposed to a weapon. In order to solve certain problems within society that may never disappear, such as Marijuana use, lack of motivation for a high school education or even gambling, society must learn to manage these problems and use them for our benefit, as opposed to fighting an uphill battle. The High Sierra Diamonds 95 girls fast-pitch softball team is presenting gambling in a new light and who knows? It might just make a difference. How can people look at a charity event, however the money may be raised, and see it as something bad. I'm so tired of such cheap propaganda!
Anyway to give back to the community is worth it, whatever the means |
The High Sierra Diamonds 95 girls fast-pitch softball team is trying to make a difference, in its home community and in the way poker is perceived across the nation.
