Can Poker Help Students with Math?

Every poker player will tell you that the sport is a game of skill, and now a high school in the US state of Virginia has caught on, introducing a poker club in the hope it will help students with mathematicians and logic, the Washington Post has reported.

According to the report, the club - which focuses on solving and understanding math problems through examples from poker - has quickly turned into one of the most popular activities on offer at George Mason High School in Falls Church, in the Washington metro area.

The Post even quoted one student as saying: "I don't know whether math class is helping me with poker, or whether poker is helping me in math class."

Poker in College

We are not aware of any other high schools using poker in the classroom, but what we do know is that universities have already understood for a long time the value of the sport in teaching math and other valuable skills.

The most prominent example of this is the poker club formed by Harvard Law School Professor Charles Nesson in 2007, which uses the activity to teach students about reasoning and human behavior.
