EGBA Praises New EU Online Gambling Report

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has praised a new report released by the European Union that admits that a national approach is no longer viable when dealing with online gambling.

The report, entitled "Council Conclusions on the Framework of Gambling and Betting in the Member States of the European Union," said that EU ministers had finally reached this conclusion after the debate on the matter was initiated way back in 2008.

According to the report, representatives of the union's 27 member states agreed that their national gambling regulatory authorities could take a number of actions to improve cooperation, on matter such as consumer protection, sports integrity, cutting red tape and sharing experiences on responsible gambling.

EGBA Secretary General Sigrid Ligne said that the importance of the conclusions for online gambling in the EU cannot be underestimated, adding: "The member states expressly support an in-depth discussion on online gambling in the internal market as proposed by [current head of the European Commission] Commissioner Barnier."
