Facebook has changed its advertising guidelines to allow ads for gambling, including online gambling. Such ads were prohibited under a long-standing policy at the company.

The social networking giant will allow the whole online gaming gamut to advertise on its website: online poker sites, online casinos, sportsbooks and other. Special rules will prohibit online gambling ads from targeting US customers.

Legal Aspects

The legal challenge for Facebook is to comply with local laws wherever Facebook is used, namely everywhere. The guidelines call for each advertiser to follow local laws in creating the ads and in targeting users. Facebook will determine which Facebook members will be targeted, based on the countries they live in. Hence the US exception.

Costly Ads

Advertisers - operators and affiliates - who will want to advertise on Facebook and have overcome the legal obstacles to doing so under company guidelines, will have to cough up $30,000 - the minimum advertising campaign.

The guidelines read:

"Gambling advertising may be available through a direct sales partnership with Facebook. These partnerships require a minimum monthly spend of $30,000 USD."

For this sum Facebook promises an opportunity to "reach over 750 million people where they connect and share," as their Facebook Ads slogan states.
