The Gambling Dictionary
Entering an online casino, a poker room or any other Internet gambling site is like crossing into a new world in many ways. Although no passport needs to be stamped and even currency does not need to be converted, there is a new lingo to learn. Gambling terms, professional vocabulary, insider references and technical terminology are all listed in this section. O
Odds
In online gambling, odds stand for the amount a bet pays off, not the statistical chance that a player will win. For example, 2 to 1, 10 to 1, and so on.

In sports betting, Odds are the sportsbook's or bookmaker's view of the chance of a competitor winning (adjusted to include a profit).
 
Odds Against
Ratio of negative to positive outcomes expected in the long term.

 
Odds For
Ratio of positive to negative outcomes expected in the long term.

 
Offer
The price, or rate, that a willing seller is prepared to sell at. See also Ask.

 
Offsuit
Cards that are in a different suit from each other.

 
Omaha
A poker game where players are dealt 4 cards down to be used individually while there are 5 face up community cards to be shared. Players combine 2 of their cards with 3 of the shared cards in order to make the highest ranking 5 card combination they can.

 
On a Draw
In an attempt to complete a hand using cards that haven't been dealt yet, the player will maintain a stake in the pot.

 
One-Roll Bet
A bet in a game of Craps that wins or loses depending on a single roll of the dice.

 
Onesies
The term applied to slot machine players who choose to play only one coin per spin. This means that onesies slot players are often not in the running to win the jackpot as most slot machines require the player to make the maximum bet to qualify.

 
Open
Placing the first wager or bet into the first round of play. Also called bringing it in.

 
Open Card
A card that all players are eligible to see and is dealt face up.

 
Open Pair
Same as an open card, but in a pair formation.

 
Open-ended Straight Draw
A hand where four out of the five cards required for a straight can only be completed by a specific rank of card. Examples would be A-2-3-4 or A-K-Q-J.

 
Option
An extra card which is dealt to a player in a stud or draw game as a twist. Or in a blind game, this is the choice a player can make as a pre-flop when all betting has been checked around already.

 
or Better - Hand Value
A game that requires the player to hold a certain card value or better to remain in order to make the first bet or win the pot.

 
Out of the Money
Describes the situation where the player doesn't win the money or prize.

 
Outdraw
When a player is dealt cards that complete or improve their hand, especially if they were an underdog previously.

 
Outkick
A player who holds a higher kicker than their opponents and wins the pot.

 
Outside Bet
Bets in Roulette divide into two categories: inside bets and outside bets. The terms refer to the location on the wheel, as explained in the following.

Outside bets include:Even money bets: betting on (almost) half the options, a total of 18 numbers. Special boxes that represent the various options (black, red, low, high, even or odd) are available on the table.Group Bets: betting on groups of 12 numbers, the first dozen, middle dozen or third group of 12 numbers.Column: betting on 12 numbers as well, only these numbers are on one of the three vertical lines.
 
Over
Describes a card value which makes the three of a kind in a full house or is the higher pair in a two pair hand.

 
Over/Under
A bet on whether the total points or goals scored by the two teams will be over or under a specified number.

 
Overbet
A bet, raise or reraise that is significantly larger than the amount already in the pot.

 
Overcall
Matching all previous bets without raising or making the minimum required bet. If playing a declare game, this is the action of declaring a hand of rank that is higher than is actually held.

 
Overcard
In a community card game, this is the card which is of higher rank than any others on the board or in the community card pile.

 
Own the Cube
By accepting the doubling cube in Backgammon, the player becomes the owner of the cube, and the only one who can offer a double next.
