Enchanted Playing CardsPublished December 26, 2012 by OCR Editor
A true yet magical tale in time for Christmas.
Wonders never cease to happen.
A full set of 400-year old Royal playing cards has been discovered intact. The gilded, silver playing cards are single sided, with images of Roman Emperors and Sultans skillfully engraved on them. At the time of their creation, playing cards hadn't been standardized, and each country had their own icons. These cards most resemble 17th century Italian playing cards.
More interesting still is the person they are said to belong to: a Portuguese queen on the run? The story goes that when, in 1807, Napoleon invaded Portugal, the Queen fled to Brazil, taking her cards with her, and have survived ever since.
Even though this particular set of cards are ornamental, no doubt, cards were a very popular pastime hundreds of years ago. It's astounding to think, the very same games - though they may be virtual and not played with 'real' cards, are still so more-ish today. Online poker is said to have greatly increased the number of poker players worldwide, which is no surprise of course. Playing online is extremely convenient but more to the point, thrilling. Centuries on, the card game continues to allure and enthrall.
