NHL Week 1 Roundup: The 2018/19 Regular Season UnderwayPublished October 11, 2018 by Sol FH
An action-packed week of NHL action, and betting odds this year are particularly exciting.
It was a wild opening week of the 2018/19 NHL Regular Season, which will be its 101st season. The 31 teams in the league this year are all vying for the chance to hoist the Stanley Cup over their heads, but before that is even close to happening, we have got around 77 more games to play before the playoffs.
After the first week of action, teams vary from having played 1-4 games depending on their schedule so far. Let's take a look at some of the early leaders, the biggest weekend games, and betting lines.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have come out with an early lead over the rest of the division. They are one of the few teams to have played four games until now, and they are 3-1. They have beaten division-mates, the Montreal Canadiens, and then the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Dallas Stars. Their sole loss was to the Ottawa Senators 5-3. The next game for the Leafs will be against the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 00:30 GMT, and for that, bet365 Sports has posted odds in favor of Toronto at 1.57, while Detroit is at 2.55.
It has been a long time since the Carolina Hurricanes were on top of the division, but such is the case this year. The 'Canes are 3-0-1 and are on a three-game win streak after beating the Blue Jackets, Canucks, and the Rangers. The Hurricanes will try to keep the streak going against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night at 23:00 GMT. 888 Sport has Carolina as favorites at 1.80 while the Wild is at 2.80.
Last year's Stanley Cup winners, the Washington Capitals are also off to a great start at 2-0-1 and will face-off against the New Jersey Devils at 00:00. 888 Sport is also on top of the odds for this big matchup in favor of the Caps at 2.40, while the Devils are at 2.60.
The leaders so far are the Chicago Blackhawks who look like they've got a strong roster this season. They are 2-0-1 and have beaten the Senators and the Blues so far. Their next game is against the Wild tonight at 1:00. If you plan to watch this game, and you should, Betfair Sports has odds in favor of the Wild at 1.95. This is a good chance to look at the underdogs at 2.90.
The big story here is for the Anaheim Ducks who are out to a great start at 3-0-1. They lost to the Coyotes last night after a shootout, but have beaten the Sharks, the Coyotes (second time playing them), and the Red Wings respectively. The Ducks go back to work on Saturday night at 1:00 GMT. Odds are still not posted for this game.
The Pacific Division is always a great battle and you should expect big things from the Vegas Knights, the Flames, and the Sharks once they all get started. The action across the board this year will be faster, harder, and more intense than years past. The odds continue to be competitive and if you haven't checked them out so far...do so.
