Carioca is another variation of rummy and quite similar to Contract Rummy, however, it is only played with two people and is slightly more difficult due to a few rules of the game. Carioca is hugely popular in Chile and Argentina. As with other rummy games, Carioca is fun and easy to play online even if you are a beginner.

The goal of Carioca

The objective of the Carioca is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards during each round. Every other player has their hand scored and the player with the lowest number of points at the end of the game (which is eight deals) is declared the overall winner.

How to play

Carioca is played with two decks. Each player is dealt 12 cards and the remainder go to a face-down pile on the table. The top card is flipped over and the game begins. As you are playing, you can choose from either the stock pile or the discard pile.

The objective of the game is to complete what are known as ‘contracts' which are made up of sets or sequences. Sets are three or more cards of the same value (called a Trio) and sequences are four or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order (called an Escala). Sequence may‘go around the corner' (for example, K-A-2).

Which contract you need to complete varies from deal to deal. Each contract is basically a combination of Trios and Escalas and becomes more and more difficult to complete as the game progresses. When you've made a contract, you set it down on the table.

How to become an expert

Experienced Carioca players have fined tuned their powers of observation and can memories which cards have been played. This takes time and practice obviously and playing online is a great way to perfect your skills.
