How to Scan Your Computer for Viruses

Scanning your computer for viruses is a process that you should perform regularly, in order to safeguard your computer from harm. The following steps will guide you through performing such a process for most anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs.

Topics Addressed

  • Anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs
  • How to check for viruses and spy ware

Previously Required Knowledge

You should have an anti-virus or anti-spy ware program already installed onto your computer in order to complete this process. If you do not, they are available for download on the internet, or can be purchased directly through the companies.

Instructions

Step 1

Double click on the icon for your anti virus or anti-spy ware program, located either on the bottom of your screen or in the programs area of the start menu.

Step 2

Go to the area regarding anti-viruses and anti-spy ware. This will usually be very clearly labeled.

Step 3

You will be presented with your computer's status and several options, placed either along side or beneath this. Choose the option "scan for viruses or spy ware".

Step 4

A virus and spy ware scan will now commence. It may take several minutes to complete. When completed, if you have no viruses or spy ware all you should do is press "ok" or "close". If you do have some, the program will advise you on how to deal with them. Usually it will rid them automatically and then notify you of what was found and done upon completion.

Tips

  • The options and processes available may differ between different anti-virus and anti-spy ware programs. In most cases, the program will advise you best what to do, and always has a "help" option in the case that you are unsure.
  • If you haven't already, after step 2 you may set your program to perform an anti-virus and spy ware check on a regular basis. Again, the program will advise you on what is most suited.
