About the Games

The basic run down on the various casino games you will encounter in your gambling experience, fundamental vocabulary and terms, rules and more.

There are a wide range of games that can be played by gamblers, and each game can be grouped into one of four categories: card, dice, table, or slot games. Here we will give a brief overview of each game category, and provide links for further reading:

Card Games - card games have been around since the late 1300's, and vary between different countries. The playing cards can be either traditional or game specific, and the list of card games available is extensive. Gambling mostly involves three main card games; Poker, Blackjack, and Baccarat. However, there are many others that can be played for real money wagers, including Bourré, Primero, Red Dog, and thirty-one.

Most card games are modified versions of existing card games, yet some are simply invented. In any case, rules are subject to adjustment according to the wish of the players. The rules that are agreed upon in any given group of players are known as the "house rules." A standard "deck" or "pack" refers to set of 52 cards of suit and rank, and is used for almost all gambling card games. Likewise, the games almost always require cards to be dealt, and therefore necessitate a dealer.

Dice Games - According to findings, the use of dice dates back to approximately 2000 BC. Dice were used in ancient history not only for gaming, but for other decision-making and recreational purposes. For example, it was shown that Roman soldiers tossed dice for Christ's clothing while standing guard during his crucifixion. Also, it is believed that dice were used as a way of cheering up soldiers in-between the Trojan War battles. The dice themselves differ from one game to the next; although the ordinary dice is most commonly used, there are many kinds in existence, including polyhedral and psychic dice.

Dice are usually used as a random device, yet are the most central component of any given dice game. In gambling, such games can include Liar's dice, and Craps, which has many versions of its own. Craps is also considered the world's most popular and alluring dice game.

Table Games - are games of skill whereby balls or disks are propelled across specially-designed tables.Table games emerged around the same time as card games in the mid 1300's, and each game has significantly developed since. Some table games are even miniaturized versions of outdoor sports. The list of different table games available to gamblers includes roulette, darts, and billiards - which in itself comprises four variants, including Snooker and American Pool.

In gambling, table games will encompass a table covered with a printed felt layout, and may even provide seating arrangements for players and dealer. The area in which the dealer deals in known as "the pit", and players are required to sit on the opposite side of the pit. The games themselves are played with various playing equipment, such as dice or card, and can therefore sometimes be a mix of other game types.

Slot Games - A precursor to the modern slot machine is Sittman and Pitt's machine developed in 1891 in Brooklyn, New York. The simplest version, however, was invented by Charles Fay from San Francisco in 1887. Yet it wasn't until 1964 that the first fully electromechanical slot machine called "Money Honey" was developed.

Slot games today are a coin-operated kind of casino game, in which players must pull a lever to activate the spinning of three or more reels. The combination of symbols seen on the reels when the spinning stops will determine a win or loss, and to what degree. In casinos, winnings are usually collected as credit for other games, and odds are usually pre-programmed. Sometimes a line of machines will be linked together to create a large "jackpot" prize, which is known as "progressive jackpot."

Many of today's slot games are based on poker card games. What this means is that the slot machine reels will contain various card faces, and the final combination of card faces spun will determine whether or not the player has won. This is decided according to the poker variant's winning hand rules. For this reason, slot games in Australia are called "poker machines".
