Winning the Backgammon World Championship is the equivalent of claiming goal in the Olympics and hundreds of professional players took their chances this year. Cihangir Cetinel outshined all her opponents and squared off in the final with Russian Sergey Erokhin, whom she vanquished by 19 to 8. It was a landslide victory and the winner was congratulated by the officials as well as her peers.
The tournament started on August 4 and lasted for almost one week, with the Fairmont Hotel in Monte Carlo bringing together the best in this line of work. Players announced their intention to participate many weeks in advance and the interest for the 40th backgammon championship exceeded expectations. The competition was tough on all levels, with Boris Gurov winning the Intermediate event, Pia Aimonen prevailing in the Novice competition, while Shimon Kagan bested the participating seniors.
