$2.4 billion casino resort looks to revive fortunes of USA’s second gambling market.
Atlantic City, the United States' second-largest land-based casino market, has welcomed its 12th and newest casino the city - Revel, a $2.4 billion resort which locals are hoping will revive the struggling industry.
Newest Atlantic City Casino
Revel is Atlantic City's first purely non-smoking casino resort and the first to give floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean. But the project was a long time in the making, as it ran out of money during the 2008 global financial crisis and suffered the loss three executives in a plane crash the same year. State tax incentives helped it reach completion.
The casino has 2,450 slot machines and 160 tabel games. Its hotel, which will fully open later this year, will have 1,898 rooms. Overall the resort will employ 5,500 people, and include spa facilities, 14 restaurants, 10 pools and a 5,050-seat theatre which will host a performance from Beyoncé on the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
Land-Based Gambling Survives
The number of Americans visiting, establishing accounts and playing at online and mobile casinos has been on the rise for years, despite the introduction of a 2006 law effectively banning Internet gambling in the country and various clampdowns and against online poker and gambling since then.
Nevertheless, Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos continue to attract customers, and the opening of this latest establishment in Atlantic City proves that there is enough interest both at an online and land-based level to support the existence of casinos at both levels.
