Online betting isn't the only gambling-related bill to be put toward state legislature.
New Jersey's push toward legalizing online gambling has been talked about a lot recently, but another bill being put to the state legislature at the same time could see horse race betting put on the menu at bars and restaurants
Pilot Program
The State Senate and Assembly committees will on consider today (Thursday) legislation that would create a pilot program in New Jersey's northern countries and part of Ocean County, which would allow electronic wagering terminals to be placed at venues that also serve food and alcohol.
If the measure is passed, a limited number of bars and restaurants will be given licenses to create mini-off-track wagering sites, which would enable customers to place bets on horse races that are run at state-owned tracks. The current law already provides for 15 OTW facilities, but this would expand them significantly.
Online Bet Bill
Meanwhile, on the online gambling front, State Sen. Raymond Lesniak told news agencies this week that he will try to get a bill to legalize online gambling within New Jersey borders to state governor Chris Christie's desk by next week. The bill aims to turn New Jersey into a national leader in internet gambling, now that states are able to legalize it themselves.
The Department of Justice said last week that states and their lotteries will be permitted to enable online gambling for local residents, excluding sports betting. In a new interpretation of the federal Wire Act, it said this only prevents gamblers from wagering on sports but does not prevent betting on casino games, poker and similar activities.
