French Open begins at Paris' Roland Garros claycourts on Sunday, continues for two weeks.
The 2nd Tennis Grand Slam is almost here, as the best player prepare to hit the famous claycourts of Roland Garros on Sunday with the common aim of still being there at the end of the two-week tournament and lifting the coveted French Open trophy.
French Open Preview
The men's singles tournament appears to be a race between two players: Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard has dominated this tournament, winning there seven times in the last eight years (he lost in the fourth round in 2009), but the Serb is in better form and comfortably beat Rafa in the final at the lead-up tournament in Monte Carlo. Roger Federer remains a threat, while Brit Andy Murray is a long-shot given his weakness on clay.
In the women's singles, Serena Williams is the form player and favorite despite not having been past the quarter-finals at Roland Garros since winning there way back in 2002. Having said that, this is wide open from a punters' perspective as Serena is picked almost every year and finds some way to fail. Therefore, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka are also considered genuine threats.
Recalling Last Year
Rafael Nadal broke Bjorn Borg's record for most French Open Men's Singles titles and equaled Chris Evert's record for most French Open titles by a man or women when he won at Roland Garros last year.
In the women's singles, Maria Sharapova beat 21st seed Sara Errani to win her first French Open title and complete a career Grand Slam (having previously won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open). The win also returned her to the WTA World Number One ranking for the first time in four years.
Pre-Tournament Odds
As has been the case the past few years, the French Open betting odds are dominated by a select few with everyone else as rank outsiders. Having said that, the fact that the 21 st seed came within a whisker of winning the women's title last year shows the value in betting on underdogs.
