Mobile Betting to Jump Five-Fold in Five Years

Global expenditure on mobile betting will increase five-fold in the next five years as social gambling activity surges and American states increasingly regulate casino and lottery services, a study by Juniper Research has concluded.

Mobile gambling expenditure is forecast to hit a staggering $100 billion by the year 2017, five times more than the approximately $20 billion in mobile wagers recorded last year, the Juniper report said.

The report pointed out that around 20% of wagers placed with UK online betting operators are already being placed via mobile phones or tablets. But it also noted that sports betting's dominance of the mobile gambling field will be replaced by mobile casino gambling in the next five years.

Social gaming companies like Zynga are increasingly moving from free-play casino games into real cash gambling, while mobile casinos such as Probability are gradually integrating with Facebook, report author Dr Windsor Holden said. He added that consumers will be able to use social networks to register for casino games, significantly increasing the reach of these services.
