High-profile mobile games manufacturer is in talks with potential American partners.
Probability, a high-profile British manufacturer of mobile casino games, is in advanced talks with potential American partners, in a sign that the industry floodgates could be about to open as states relax betting regulations.
Probability of mobile gaming
Probability CEO Charles Cohen told Reuters news agency this week that within a couple of years, half the population of the United States will either live in a state or very close to a state in which they will be able to conduct real-money gambling through their mobile smartphone or desktop.
The former political speechwriter, who co-founded Probability in 2004, said in the same interview that his firm is "getting a lot of interest from US companies." He added that it is looking to add at least one European territory this year, with plans to enter France, Spain, Sweden and Denmark.
Shift in legal environment
Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware have all passed regulations approving some of form of online gambling in the past month. Nevada's law authorizes local firms to host internet gambling for non-state residents. This effectively creates a nationwide framework for online gaming despite the failure of federal regulation attempts.
The changing legal environment has seen most of the major online gambling operators shift their attention to the US market. 888 has become the first to receive a Nevada license to conduct online operations, but with the probability of more states regulating, mobile gaming could also be on the cards.
