Ex-presidential candidate caught playing America's favorite card game
Online poker may not be completely legal in the United States, but it is popular even amongst the highest echelons: even ex-presidential candidate John McCain is a fan of playing on his smartphone.
McCain Caught
Senator McCain was caught playing a fake money version of online poker during Tuesday's Syria hearings on Capitol Hill. Just in case you thought this was a joke, he was caught by photographer Melina Mara of the Washington Post.
Being one of the few honest politicians on the Hill, he then tweeted about it afterward: "Scandal! Caught Playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!"
He later told CNN: "As much as I like to always listen with rapt attention constantly to remarks of my colleagues over a three and a half hour period, occasionally I get a little bored and so I resorted."
Syria Also Priority
Just to stress how big it is that McCain was playing online poker, it is worth considering that he is one of the key politicians involved in the debate over whether the US should punish Syria with military action over its use of chemical weapons against civilians.
McCain said following a closed-door meeting with President Barack Obama Tuesday morning that: "If the Congress were to reject this resolution ,after the president of the United States has already committed to action, the consequences would be catastrophic...in that the credibility of this country with friends and adversaries alike would be shredded.
