Ladbrokes Slams Advertising Watchdog

Onine bookmaker and casino Ladbrokes has slammed the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), following the latter's decision to ban a recent advertising campaign for Ladbrokescasino.com The advertising watchdog banned the humorous ads after receiving just one public complaint, in which it was claimed the ads linked gambling to risk-taking and reckless behavior. The two ads, created by M & C Saatchi, featured two fictional thrill-seekers who end up paying with their lives after taking one risk too many. The ads then end with the slogan "Ladbrokescasino.com: Quench your thrill buds." In one of the ads, narrator Williem Snyman talks about a shark-diving student of his who dived into shark-infested waters in a seal costume with raw bacon and sausages tied to his wetsuit. "All we could bury was his flipper," Snyman laments. Ladbrokes is appealing to the Independent Reviewer for ASA Adjudications to overturn the decision. A Ladbrokes spokesperson said the ads were deliberately ridiculous, and that in contrast to the allegations, the nature of the stories "actively encouraged caution and moderation over extreme behavior and recklessness." "Ladbrokes fully supports the code of practice relating to gambling advertising but this ruling is an example of political correctness going too far," said the Managing Director of Ladbrokes' remote betting and gaming operation, John O'Reilly. In April 2008, Paddy Power and InterCasino were the first gambling companies to fall foul of the 2005 Gambling Act, both having advertising campaigns banned by the ASA.

Delaware Close to Legalized Sports Betting

The U.S. state of Delaware could go a step closer to legalizing sports betting when Governor Ruth Ann Minner leaves office on January 20, legislators have said. The push to legalize betting in the tiny east coast state was put on hold in 2007 when the Democrat governor announced that she would veto any legislation to legalize it. Minner will be replaced by governor-elect Jack Markell, also a Democrat. Markell has already promised to consider legalization, saying he needs to "understand the costs and the benefits." House Speaker Bob Gilligan (Democrat) said he believes betting could be approved in the upcoming legislative session, saying "If we're going to do it, we're going to do it quickly." The last attempt to legalize sports betting in Delaware was knocked back in the Senate Finance Committee after being approved by the House. But Senate Speaker Thurman Adams (Democrat) said he expects the legislation will be pushed through to a Senate hearing, a big step toward eventual legalization. Estimating the benefits Sports betting is sure to bring extra revenue to the Delaware state coffers, although there is debate over exactly how much the figure would be. A recent report by the state's gaming industry said sports betting could bring in as much as $71 million. A Governor's Task Force Report gave a more modest total, estimating an additional $22.5 million to $30.6 in the first year. One this is for certain - the close proximity of Delaware to the large population centers of neighboring New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, means it is more than just Delaware residents who are waiting to see what happens.

New Google Rules for Gambling Affiliates

Google, so dominant a search engine that the company's brand name has become an officially-recognized verb, recently announced that it would allow UK gambling affiliates to bid on Google Adwords. The announcement comes just months after the company allowed gambling operators to buy Adwords. Almost all Google users would be familiar with the concept of Adwords, although they might not realize it. Adwords allow companies to create advertisements and choose keywords, which are words or phrases related to the business. When people search on Google using one of the keywords, the ad then has a chance of appearing next to the search results. With Google commanding over 50 percent of the market share in the field of online search engines, it's no wonder UK affiliates will be ecstatic at the good news. Affiliates will be limited for the time being, however, with operator terms such as Gala Bingo or Bet365 not able to be bid on. Advertisers must be registered with the UK Gambling Commission and have a valid license held in the United Kingdom or a number of other UK dependencies. Income Access, which offers affiliate marketing solutions for the online gaming industry, has begun offering new PPC tracking tools that allow UK gambling affiliates to track their referrals from Adwords. Nicky Senyard, CEO of Income Access, said: "Through our Affiliate Custom Tracking tools, UK gambling affiliates will be able to track their referrals right from when they acquire them via Adwords. This functionality will be available to affiliates in both Income Access network and third party program powered by our software."

Bwin Gambling Arrives in Italy

Bwin Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will launch real-money skill games online for Italians, after becoming the first operator to receive permission to do so. Italy's Amministrazione Autonoma Dei Monopoli Di Stato (the State Monopolies Autonomies Administration, or AAMS) regulatory body approved the move, which will allow Bwin to offer games including solitaire, blackjack, three-card poker, backgammon and eight-ball billiard. The Austrian company had already launched poker for Italians in late October, using the new P5 Poker Engine, developed by its Ongame Network subsidiary. "As the world's leading online gaming company, Bwin continues to fortify its position in the Italian market as a genuine 'house of games' with sports bets and online poker and now also real-money skill games," said co-CEO Norbert Teufelberger. Founded in 1999 as Betandwin.com, Bwin is constantly developing its products, offering Web sites in 22 different languages. The company has a particularly large presence in Italy, where it sponsors the A.C. Milan football club, meaning its logo appears on the team's jersey.

Canadian Wins Exotic PokerStars Contest

Canadian Poorya Nazari, 22, won the top prize of $3 million in the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Saturday in the Bahamas, after qualifying for the tournament on PokerStars.com. Nazari qualified through a $33 rebuy turbo tournament. The youngster, who only recently graduated from McMaster University with a degree in biochemistry, didn't look like a chance to win the tournament until he made the final table, after holding on to a short stack through large parts of days three and four of the event. He entered the final table in second place to chips-leader Alex Gomes, but his main rival went out in fourth and Nazari went on to win the tournament. Nazari then eliminated Tony Gregg on the final hand of the night to capture the $3 million first place prize and the first major championship of 2009. His pair of tens was enough to beat Gregg's Queen high. Gregg earned $1,700,000 for his runner-up performance Over 1000 players took part in PokerStars Carribean, the majority of whom had won their seats online. They were all competing for a total prize pool of more than $12.5 million. "It hasn't sunk in it, it hasn't hit me yet. It definitely feels unbelievable; it feels surreal. I can't believe what's happening," Nazari told a PokerStars interviewer after the game. The next stop for the new poker pro is the European Poker Tour Grand Final, being held in Monaco from April 28 to May 3.
