That august institution, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), has decided, in its infinite wisdom, and acting as a moral compass for the citizens of the state, that playing online casino games on your mobile phone is just as bad as visiting porn sites. The UTA has announced that any traveler accessing a wireless Internet service, via cellular telephone, or computer to play on online gambling websites, will be hit with fines of up to $500. An equivalent fine will also be aimed at any of its customers using their wireless devices to access pornography websites. Supporters of this legislation point to the fact that the Internet service is provided to travelers on the Utah trains and buses free of charge, and as such, the UTA then has every right to tie restrictions to its use. A spokesman for the Utah Transit Authority announced that passengers' devices could be inspected by UTA agents who would monitor suspect user devices, and who had the power to issue on-the-spot fines. On the plus side - passengers would have the right to appeal any UTA fine.

US Congressman Barney Frank's bill to legalize online gambling is gaining rapid support, with another four congress representatives signing up as co-sponsors last week. Congressional representatives Steve Driehaus (D-Ohio), Jared Polis (D-Colorado), (D-Arizona) and Steve Israel (D-New York) all added their names to the HR 2267 Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act, which would regulate and license non-sports betting online gambling in the United States. The new additions mean at least 30 congressional representatives have backed the bill since its introduction in May. Frank (D-MA), who is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, continues to lead the fight against the2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which effectively banned Internet gambling by outlawing the transfer of funds from financial institutions to gambling websites. In addition to the launching of HR 2267 in May, Frank also introduced the HR 2266 Reasonable Prudence in Regulation Act, which aims to put the UIGEA on hold until December 2010 when the outcome of HR 2267 will be known. Frank is hoping the shift of power in Washington, DC will make his efforts easier, after similar attempts during the Bush Administration's time in power failed miserably. Current President Barack Obama has not commented publicly on the issue.
A leading writer on online gambling affairs, Thomas Somach, has been severely criticized for linking the murderer of the guard at Washington's Holocaust Museum with online gambling. James von Brunn, an 88-year-old former soldier turned white supremacist, gunned down 39-year-old Stephen T. Johns outside the museum dedicated to the memory of Jews murdered by the Nazis in World War 2. Somach, who is the owner of website Pokerhelp.com, claimed that because von Brunn's website contained links to the Casino Tropez online casino, there may be a link between the white supremacist movement and online gambling. Von Brunn's website was full of racist and anti-Semitic propaganda. "Irresponsible Reporting" Somach was blasted by the gambling industry for irresponsible reporting. Critics stated that while von Brunn's website may have contained an affiliate link, this did not directly indicate that the racist murderer was involved with the online gambling industry in any significant way. One critic stated this was equivalent of linking the racist murderer to the publishing industry if his site had contained an easily accessible link to Amazon. Somach's work is widely syndicated throughout the online gambling industry. Accountability However, despite the furor caused by Somach's remarks, there does remain an open issue of affiliate site accountability. This event raised an important question on whether gambling websites, and indeed any large businesses that operate affiliate website programs, actually check on those affiliate sites that promote their companies. Von Brunn's website should have been spotted by the affiliate manager at the St Tropez website, and clearly it was not.
The National Football League has come under heavy fire from critics recently over the apparent double standards in its gambling policy. The NFL has run an ongoing public campaign against allowing betting on its matches, yet in a major back flip recently it announced its decision to sell its team brands to state lotteries for advertizing on scratch-offs. Articles in major media outlets including the Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press pointed out the irony of the NFL's confusing policy given, citing the fact that gamblers helped found the league. Major US newspapers have also focused recently on the criticism being leveled at the NFL from around the country. The Wall Street Journal reported that fans and state officials see the league's stance as unfair because of the public funding the NFL has received. One professor of sports economics was quoted as saying the NFL has taken in nearly $17 billion in taxpayer stadiums to build new stadiums in the past two decades. Sports marketing expert from Boston University was quoted in the Boston Globe as saying that the NFL'S back flip was a money-grab because of losses caused by the nationwide financial crisis. "It's another way for them to promote the teams and to get a cut for licensing the logos," the expert was quoted as saying. With the NFL currently threatening a lawsuit against the state of Delaware after the supreme court recently openedthe way for the state to open the only legal sports books outside Nevada, the NFL will either have to change its stance or the barrage of criticism will continue.

Wimbledon is a celebration for the tennis world and for the betting world too. It will be unfortunately, regrettable in fact, if it were to sour. On the second day of the competition, a match between Austrian Jurgen Melzer and American Wayne Odesnik has drawn attention and started an investigation. First to notice the suspicious activity - betting has turned suddenly in favor of a straight sets win for the Melzer - were the bookmakers themselves. Paddy Power, Ladbrokes and Sportingbet have all cancelled betting on the match, while other, namely William Hill Sports, did not see the trend as anything other than "reasonable." The Gaming Intelligence website reports that games of this sort draw about £10,000 in set betting; this match saw £350,000 in bets. According to recently agreed procedures, the bookmakers have filed a report to the Tennis Integrity Unit, which is allowed to see all betting taking place and can decide on an investigation. The players deny involvement and we will wait on the investigation to conclude and update you with the findings. Play safe and fair.
Almost 25 years since becoming the youngest ever winner of the men's singles event at Wimbledon, 42-year-old Boris Becker is back in the headlines. However, Becker has hung up his tennis whites in favor of the green baize of the poker table. Becker is serious. In fact, he's turned pro. After years as a tennis professional, Becker has now turned his skills as tennis strategist to outsmarting his poker opponents. Becker's interest in poker began while touring on the ATP circuit, when players would play cards during rain breaks. New Poker Celebrity Becker is quickly becoming a recognizable favorite on the international poker scene. In November of 2008, he joined Team PokerStars, the largest online poker card room in the world. In July of this year, he will participate in the European Poker in his native Dortmund, and will later take part in the Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo. Becker has stated that he intends to continue to sharpen his poker skills with the intention of reaching the upper echelons of international poker. Dealing with the Pressure Becker says that poker is all about staying cool under pressure, and this is exactly where he's been for the last three decades. To Becker, the poker tour is like the tennis tour, traveling from city to city. With his focus set on some of the biggest poker purses in the world, Becker has the tools, and all that remains to be seen is whether he has the nerve.
Suspicious betting over a first round match between Austrian Jurgen Melzer and American Wayne Odesnik, ranked 30th and 109th respectively, was reported on the site yesterday. The match has attracted nearly $1 million in wagers, while the average for a first-round match at Wimbledon is less than $163,000, according to Betfair spokesman Mark Davies said. Davies explained to Associated Press: Wagering on the match have soared after a TV commentator pointed out one of the players is injured. The sportsbook has reported the unusual betting patterns to the Tennis Integrity Unit, but does not suspect any wrongdoing. A thigh injury, understandably, has shortened Melzer's odds significantly.
