Federer, Murray on Course for Wimbledon Final

As the 2009 Wimbledon tennis grand slam heads into its second week, pre-tournament favorites Roger Federer and Andy Murray remain on course to meet in the men's final. World number two Federer, who has dropped only one set in his first three matches, has firmed to a 1.57 favorite at British bookmaker Ladbrokes. He will potentially face fourth-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Murray, 2.75 to become the first Brit to win the world's most prestigious tournament since Fred Perry 73 years ago, has looked just as impressive as Federer so far, but has an easier run to the final, with sixth seed Andy Roddick the most highly-rated challenger on his side of the draw. Odds of 1.80 are now being offered on a Murray-Federer final. Ladbrokes is also offering special odds on the men's event, including a virtual Davis Cup, pitting pairs from different countries against each other based on the most total match wins in the tournament for the pair. Serbia is a 2.62 favorite, with Djokovic carrying the flag alone after compatriot Victor Troicki was knocked out in the third round. The nominated Czech pair, Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych, are good value at 3.50 as they are the only listed pair that are both still in the tournament. The Williams sisters remain favorites in the ladies' singles heading into the second week - Serena, 2.62, and Venus, 3.25 - with pre-tournament third favorite Maria Sharapova now out of the race. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has firmed to 7.50, to become the main challenger to the American sisters leading into the round of 16. A £10 free bet for new customers at Ladbrokes. Over 70 betting markets available for every Men's Singles match at Wimbledon at William Hill Sports.

Frank Gambling Bill Delayed Until September

Hearings on legislation introduced by US Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) to overturn laws against online gambling have been delayed until at least September, according to a spokesperson for the Poker Players Alliance. No specific reason has been given for the delay in hearings, which were supposed to begin in July, but the ongoing global financial crisis has dominated proceedings on the House Financial Services Committee, which Frank chairs and at which hearings on the gambling bills would have been held. Frank introduced HR 2267 and HR 2266 as part of the push he is leading to overturn the the2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which effectively banned Internet gambling by outlawing the transfer of funds from financial institutions to gambling websites. The HR 2267 Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act would regulate and license non-sports betting online gambling in the United States. The HR 2266 Reasonable Prudence in Regulation Act aims to put the UIGEA on hold until December 2010 when the outcome of HR 2267 will be known. A third bill, the HR 2268 Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act, was introduced by Congressman James McDermott (D-WA) alongside Frank's bills.

Why Revisit the Gambling Cheating Scandal

American TV audience could see a rerun of a 60 Minutes report of a cheating scandal involving two high profile gambling sites this week. The original report was aired on the investigative newsmagazine last year. It was surely worth revisiting. In the follow up to the show, we brought the words of Jeffrey Sandman, spokesperson for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative, who in an official statement said: "a different approach is necessary to protect consumers." Well, that has not arrived. The reported scandals had the software running Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet tampered with. Players lost about $20 million as a result. 60 Minutes alerted that without legal recourse and legislative changes players can get cheated again. Although players were reportedly compensated, no police investigation followed and no charged were pressed. Hence the relevance of the rerun and the importance of the Frank bill to address legal concerns and player protection.

Betfair Gambles On US Horseracing

United Kingdom-based gambling company and sportsbook Betfair is betting on a relaxation in US laws as it strengthens a push into the American horseracing market, The Times reported Friday. Betfair recently bought American horseracing television channel TVG and is planning a revamp of the channel in an effort to gain a foothold in the $14 billion US horseracing betting market, according to the report. TVG, which Betfair purchased for $50 million at the beginning of 2009, is broadcast to more than 30 million homes across the United States with more than 15 hours of live sports each day. In 2008, its Website took in around half a billion dollars in wagers. The purchase is an unprecedented move by a British gambling company into the U.S. horseracing market, and one Betfair said it wants to use to modernize the local horseracing betting industry, the report said. Betfair USA president Gerard Cunningham was quoted by The Times as saying that TVG had added nearly 30 racetracks to its coverage over the last month and a half. "We want to be able to offer every single racetrack and have access to every single race. We are broadening the bases," he was quoted as saying. According to Cunningham, TVG gives Betfair the foothold it needs in the country and positions it to take advantage of any easing of regulations in the US, which maintains much stricter betting laws than those in the UK.

PPA National Poker Week in July

The Poker Players Alliance is set to launch National Poker Week in its latest effort in the campaign to overturn anti-poker legislation in the United States. The poker week will be held from July 19-25, the PPA announced. According to the PPA, the week will rally the organization's huge membership across the country to send a message to lawmakers that their constituents support poker and need legislation to license the game for the more than 10 million Americans that play online. "Our members - the poker players of America - are our best advocates to protect the future of poker," PPA chairman Alfonse D'Amato said. "National Poker Week, with events in Washington, DC and across the country, is the PPA's way to make it clear to my former colleagues in the U.S. Congress that poker is important to voters and is here to stay," said D'Amato, who served as United States Senator for New York from 1981 to 1999. A PPA delegation including state directors and poker professionals will travel to the capital during the week to lobby members of Congress and ask them to support pro-poker legislation. There will also be organized telephone and email campaigns to Congressional offices so that poker players across the country can help the cause. A petition is also being prepared at NationalPokerWeek.com, and will be delivered to President Barack Obama during National Poker Week.

Russia Says Nyet to Online Gambling

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested back in 2006 a ban on casino gambling. This week it has become law. As of Wednesday, casinos and gambling halls, including online gambling, are illegal in a list of major Russian cities, including Moscow. Four distant regions will be allowed to host casinos, though. The ban follows similar measures passed in the Ukraine about a week ago. In both countries, the laws seem to please the poor and the elderly, while raising concerns of rising unemployment and ulterior motives. On the one hand, supporters of the law claim it will help control addiction problems and a shady business practices. On the other hand, 300,000 Russians and 200,000 Ukrainians were employed in the industry, and a ban might simply push the industry underground where it will be even harder to control.

Poker Documentary All In: The Poker Movie

The poker craze that has taken the world by storm is the subject of a new documentary, "All In: The Poker Movie," that premiered in Las Vegas earlier in June. Directed by Douglas Tirola, the documentary explores the poker renaissance. One part of the movie looks into the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act and the effect that law has had on poker in the United States. One hundred and thirty people are interviewed in the movie, including poker professional such as Scotty Nguyen, Joe Hachem and Phil Hellmuth, and celebrity poker players like Jennifer Tilly and Matt Damon. The 98-minute film premiered at the 2009 CineVegas Film Festival, where it won the festival's award for best documentary.
