The poker lobby's campaign to overturn anti-gambling laws in the United States was given another boost Sunday, following a positive op-ed by an influential Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper columnist. Writing in his regular syndicated Washington Post column, George Will wrote that Congress must recognize the difference between being a professional poker player and a gambler, and rectify the mistake it made when it effectively criminalized the online form of the game. Will writes that Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006 by cloaking "cunning with moralizing," writing that "this was more than moral pork for social conservatives." "It is also blocking online competitors from poaching gamblers from the nation's most aggressive promoters of gambling - state governments," he wrote. He added that the states are become increasingly addicted to revenue gained from lotteries and from taxation of other legal gambling, pointing out that the 42 states that have lotteries spent $520 million in 2007 promoting them. Poker Game Theory Will went on to praise poker pro Howard Lederer for promoting the works of a Hungarian-born mathematician who specialized in the relevance of game theory to strategic thinking. Will concluded with the argument that poker involves logic and probability, and held similarities to military and diplomatic strategy. "It is a poker skill to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em... Congress probably should fold its interference with Internet gambling and certainly should get its 10 thumbs off Americans' freedom to exercise their poker skills online."

Most of the money has been pouring in for the Australian contender in the lead-up to Sunday night's Miss Universe Pageant in the Bahamas. Miss Australia Rachael Finch has been backed in to steady favoritism after starting at odds of around 16/1 at most bookmakers. She is now 9/4 at Paddy Power, 6/4 at Bet365, and no longer than 7/1 at all other bookmakers. Finch's main competitors are Miss Czech Republic Iveta Lutovska and Miss Ireland Diana Donnelly, who are both hovering at around 10/1 at most bookmakers. Finch is aiming to become the third Aussie to win the pageant, which would put her country in elite company with the United States (7), Venezuela (5), Puerto Rico (4), and Sweden (3) as the only countries to have claimed the title on at least three occasions. The United States appears set to be on the outside come Sunday, with Miss USA Kristen Dalton slipping from early favoritism to a mark of 20/1 at both Paddy Power and Bet 365. Miss Great Britain is even further adrift, given odds of 80/1 at most bookmakers, while Miss China is hovering around the 200/1 mark. The 57th annual Miss Universe pageant will take place Sunday night at the Atlantis Casino's Imperial Ballroom in the Bahamas. Being hosted this year by Billy Bush and Claudia Jordan, the show includes two stages: the evening gown round, when the judges will cut the field down to their top 10, and the swimsuit round, when the judges will make their final decisions. We leave you off with a photo of last year's Miss Australia. Good luck ladies!
BetOnSports founder and operator Gary Kaplan pleaded guilty in a US court last Friday and agreed to give up more than $43 million in earnings. Authorities said Kaplan, 50, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Missouri to violations of the Federal Wire Act and to conspiracy to violate the racketeering statute, news agencies reported. "Today's guilty plea should have a lasting effect because Kaplan was not only the founder of BetOnSports, he was also one of the pioneers of illegal online gambling," said FBI special agent John Gillies. According to a statement released by Acting United States Attorney Michael Reap, Kaplan admitted in court that since the mid to late 1990s he had set up businesses entities offshore in Aruba, Antigua and Costa Rica to provide sportsbook services to Americans through Websites and toll-free numbers. BetOnSports had almost a million clients who bet more than a billion dollars, according to law enforcement officials. Under the plea agreement, Kaplan will be jailed for between 41 and 51 months when sentenced on October 2007. He has been in federal custody since his arrest in March 2007.
Residents of the Canadian province of British Columbia will soon be permitted to bet thousands of dollars each week on sports, online games and the lottery. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation announced its decision last week to raise the weekly limit on a gambling Website owned by the provincial government from C$120 (US$111) to nearly C$10,000 (US$9,250) by the year 2014. The Website sells lottery tickets and allows bets on sports and on games such as bingo and poker. The move drew heavy criticism from opposition politicians, but British Columbia Lottery Corp. president Michael Graydon defended the decision by saying that that research showed players should be permitted to set their own limits. "We felt that it was important to put a ceiling on that, but really the premise and the outcome of the research was we're in the best shape to be able to let the players set their own limits," he said, adding that the corporation - and not the government - had made the decision. But Shane Simpson of the New Democrat Party called the decision to increase spending limits "unacceptable." "This has been done with no consultation, as I can see, with people who are concerned about problem gambling," he said. The move could prove fruitful for the corporation, which said it wants to take advantage of the estimated C$87 million that residents of the west coast state spend on offshore gambling websites. William Hill has signed an agreement with PaySafeCard in a major move for the online bookmaker and gambling giant. Under the agreement, the PaySafeCard option can now be used for all William Hill products, such as its sportsbook, casino and online poker services. Based in the Austrian capital Vienna, PaySafeCard is an electronic payment option based on a pre-pay system that provides a secure method of placing deposits at online casinos. It operates through vouchers that are available for purchase from more than 230,000 outlets. Players can deposit as little at 10 British pounds using the vouchers. PaySafeCard CEO David Hunter hailed the move, saying: "We are delighted to have WilliamHill.com as a partner. The cooperation is an important step for expansion in the UK and throughout Europe." About the Deal William Hill's online service has customers from more than 175 countries, and operates in six different languages and 11 different currencies. The introduction of the PaySafeCard option will give it even more appeal, as it will bring in online casino players who do not have a credit or debit card or who do not wish to submit their credit card details online because of fear of identity theft. The agreement caps off a huge month for William Hill, which earlier in August confirmed that it was moving its online betting services and fixed-odds games from the United Kingdom to its headquarters in Gibraltar.
