Five Unbeaten Teams Enter NFL Week 6

Five weeks into the National Football League season, there are still five unbeaten teams - Indianapolis, Denver, Minnesota, New York Giants and New Orleans - an extraordinary statistic that has turned the season betting odds on its head. The Indianapolis Colts have assumed favoritism at most bookmakers, including Ladbrokes (5/1) and William Hill (7/1). Paddy Power also lists the Colts at 7/1, but behind the New York Giants, who are 6/1 to win their second Super Bowl in three years. The New Orleans Saints are third favorites, hovering between 6/1 to 15/2 at the three bookmakers, just ahead of pre-season favorites New England, who despite losing two of their first give games are still listed as 9/1 at all three aforementioned bookmakers. Minnesota is 10/1 at all three bookies, while Denver's 16/1 odds suggest they are considered the luckiest of the unbeaten teams. Most of the attention in this week's betting will be on whether the five unbeaten teams can continue their runs. Two of those teams, the Giants and the Saints, face each other in the biggest match of the season so far. And while the Giants are rater higher in Super Bowl odds, the Saints' home ground advantage has them going into the game as firm favorites (4/7 at Ladbrokes, 10/19 at both William Hill and Paddy Power). Minnesota go into their home game against the Baltimore Ravens a 5/7 Ladbrokes favorite, while not surprisingly the odds suggest Denver's run will come to an end - Ladbrokes is offering 8/5 for the Broncos to win at San Diego, while the Chargers are 10/19 for the victory. Indianapolis is the only team certain to go into week seven unbeaten - the Colts have a rest this weekend.

Sales Fall But Party Gaming Optimistic

Top Gibraltar-based online casino company PartyGaming reported on Thursday that its third-quarter sales had dropped 4 percent on the previous year to $112.7 million, in accordance with expectations. The company said it remained optimistic, adding that its fourth quarter had started strongly, also as predicted. "Our performance in the seasonally weak third quarter was in line with our expectations, with revenue up 1 percent versus the previous quarter," Party Gaming Chief Executive Jim Ryan said. PartyGaming's poker brand was the hardest hit, news agencies reported, with third quarter revenue down 8 percent compared to the second quarter, due to fierce competition from rivals. However, this was partly compensated by a rise in revenue of 2 percent compared to the second quarter in its casino operations. Players Benefit In response to the tough times facing its poker brand, the company announced that it would increase the amount of bonuses and also broaden its loyalty program for long-term customers. Ryan also told reporters that the poker division had reached its lowest ebb and would begin to grow from now on. Last April, PartyGaming reached an agreement with the US Attorney's Office to pay $105 million to avoid prosecution under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The company was found to have provided online gambling to US-based customers before online gambling was effectively banned in the US in October 2006.

Recession Affecting Online Gambling Companies?

The once Teflon coated online gaming industry has now revealed some chinks in its armor as the recession's bite has firmly taken hold. Q3 results are down Popular online gaming giant PartyGaming is expected to show a decline in revenues following the calamitous global recession of late 2008. A second major software gaming giant - CryptoLogic is expected to post declining quarterly results by November 5 release. Brands still resilient CryptoLogic provides the hugely popular Marvel Comics collection of exciting video slots. While the results posted for the third quarter of 2009 are down by approximately 1/3 from the same period a year ago, all hope is not lost. The good news is that the online casino industry has been rather resilient against the global crisis. The industry has remained afloat by being dynamic, offering incentives to players and always being perceived as a way to strike it lucky. CryptoLogic have announced that their licensed games have reflected growth this year, so the lag effect works in both directions. For now it's a strategic approach that is required to weather the storm, but weather it they certainly will.

Yankees Odds Favorites for World Series

As the Major League Baseball season finales draws ever closer, the New York Yankees have emerged as the odds favorite from the four teams still in the hunt to win the World Series. The 26-time champion Yankees, who lead the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2-0 in the American League Championship Series, are a solid 4/7 Ladbrokes favorite to once again be crowned the best team in baseball. Reigning champions the Philadelphia Phillies, who are currently locked in a 1-1 stalemate in the National League Championship Series, are 7/2, while their opponents the Los Angeles Dodgers are 9/2, and the Angels are a distant 12/1. The National League pennant is shaping up as one for the ages, and accordingly holds the most appeal for betting options. Despite finishing with two wins less than the Dodgers in the regular season (93 to 95), the Phillies are 20/29 William Hill favorites to go through to the World Series, ahead of the Dodgers at 5/4. The most likely series result is either a 4-2 Phillies victory, 3/1, or a 4-3 Dodgers victory, also 3/1. The chance of a 4-3 Phillies victory is 7/2, while it is considered unlikely (6/1) that either team will sweep the rest of the series. The Phillies are strong favorites to win game three, being played Sunday night at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. With Cliff Lee as starting pitcher, the Phillies are 5/9 at Ladbrokes to take a 2-1 lead in the series against the Hiroki Kuroda and the Dodgers, who are 8/5.

Germany Gambling Ban to be Torn Down?

The controversial German Interstate Treaty on Gambling is poised to topple, unless a revision is accepted by all 16 participating states by January 1, 2012, when the current treaty expires. German Law In an all encompassing ruling, Germany instated a ban on all forms of online gambling (except for horse racing) - much like the now infamous UIGEA ban in the United States. It has also been argued by a betting association, EGBA, whether the treaty is in direct violation of the European Law, Article 49 of the Treaty of Rome, which restricts the rights of its members by allowing access to online gambling. Two companies, Bwin and Unibet, fall under this treaty and jurisdiction of the European Union and have been instrumental in the voicing of the violation to authorities on their behalf. German Politics However, as operators and opposition parties lobby on, the Christian-Democratic (CDU) and Liberal Party (FDP) in Schleswieg-Holstein, have called for the cancellation of the ban. As one of the 16 states, this puts quite the wrench into the renewal of the ban, unless a revision is created and implemented. The CDU and FDP are looking to create an intrastate licensing system should the other states fail to agree on a revised strategy, which currently operates on a monopolistic platform. The new system would apply to both land-based and online gaming and betting. Should the January 1, 2012 deadline pass without any ratification, the current ban will become null and void. LA Times Article Attacks Online Gambling Ban

Proposals to ease online gaming restrictions were recently introduced in the United States Congress, amid calls for well-defined online gambling legislation and the taxation of internet gambling. Against this background, Pulitzer prize-winning financial journalist, Michael Hiltzik, has written a damning analysis of the United States' internet gambling regulations. He also called for the legalization of the industry. The article appeared in the LA Times on October 19, 2009. Double Standards Hiltzik opposes the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Ban, which prohibited internet betting. Online gamblers in the United States will probably support his argument that gambling laws in the country are inconsistent, confusing and hypocritical. Hiltzik says the laws vary between states and are too harsh in many.  The state of Washington, for example, puts the "crime" of betting on online poker in the same felony classification as rape. In 2002, all five states that had banned online gambling permitted gambling at real-life casinos - a hint of double standards? Chaos Hiltzik described the confusion caused by the online gambling ban, based on a 1961 law outlawing the use of telecommunication services for placing bets. In reality, the ban has been applied only to sports betting and excludes skills games. This leaves the status of online poker in doubt, as many people consider poker a game of skill. Furthermore, banks and financial institutions will find themselves in an administrative quagmire after December 1, 2010, when they are expected to start the mammoth task of checking all financial transactions for signs of online gambling activity. Hiltzik finished by stating that online gambling will continue in the US, with or without legalization. The only things achieved by criminalizing it is to leave players without legal protection, allow foreign casinos to operate without accountability, and to deny the state billions of dollars in tax revenue.
