PokerStars Breaks Own Tourney Record

Internet poker giant PokerStars broke its own world record for biggest online tournament Sunday. PokerStars already held the previous record of 65,000 entrants for a tournament held last July, but was set to smash that mark with the current tourney, with 71,000 players already signed up more than 24 hours before the beginning of proceedings, and 149,196 ending up having paid the $1 entrance fee. Participants were no doubt enticed by the $300,000 guaranteed prize pool and the minimum buy in of just one solitary dollar. The tournament will send a message to major rival Full Tilt Poker that PokerStars means business as the calendar sets to turn over to 2010. Full Tilt - the world's second-largest poker room, recently announced some major changes, including a new VIP program and changes aimed at eradicating short stackers.

Federer Tipped to Edge Out Nadal in 2010

Roger Federer leads the betting to finish the year 2010 as the number one ranked player in men's tennis, but it isn't expected to be easy, with up to five players considered good betting odds for the title. Federer won back the world number one crown in 2009 after losing it to Rafael Nadal in 2008 following four years as the unchallenged best player in the world. That will no doubt push him to achieve the feat once again, and Ladbrokes has responded accordingly by giving him 5/2 odds to finish next year at the top of men's tennis once again. But Nadal is hot on his heels, with 11/4 odds indicating that bookmakers expect him to overcome the injury problems that plagued him this year. In what appears to be the most open field in modern men's tennis history, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, 10/3, Serb Novak Djokovic, 4/1, and Brit Andy Murray, 11/2, are all considered realistic chances of ending 2010 as the ATP's world number one ranked player. If those odds aren't interesting enough, bookmakers are also offering bets on the chances of individual players winning at least one of the four grand slams next year. Federer, Nadal, del Potro and Murray are all either odds on or evens at Paddy Power to win a grand slam, while Djokovic is 13/8. Other good options include 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 7/1, and his French compatriot Gael Monfils, at 12/1.

Poll Shows Germans Gambling Despite Ban

A new poll of German citizens has shown that attempts to ban online gambling there are overall ineffective, with almost as many people betting on the web this year as there were last year. The poll, conducted by the Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (Bitkom), found that around 2 million German adults use the Internet for betting in the form of either lotteries, sports betting or playing poker. That number was down only slightly from last year's study, which found that 2.2 million Germans gamble online. Interestingly, this year's study found that only 300,000 women gambled online, meaning they constitute just 15 percent of German online gamblers. For more about online gambling in Germany, visit the German Online Casino Reports. The study, which was formulated from interviews with 1000 people, found that lotteries were still the most favored form of gambling in Europe's most populous country, with 59% of online gamblers saying they participated in the activity. Poker was second most popular, with 22 percent, and sports wagering came in not far behind at 18%. Overall, most respondents were found to have bet around 20 Euros a month, although one third of them said they bet more than that amount. Pro-gambling advocates will use the study to push for a change in the law in Germany. Online gambling is currently in a state of limbo there, as all 16 German states have banned it, but the ruling is being challenged before the European Union courts.

Oscars Betting Previewed in Time for New Year

The year 2009 is behind us, and the odds are out as to who will win the Academy Awards when the big night is held early in the new year. Comedy-drama Up in the Air, based on the 2001 Walter Kirn novel of the same name and starring George Clooney, has established itself as the early favorite to take out best motion picture, with Ladbrokes listing it at 4/9 odds. Also in the running are The Hurt Locker, a thriller set during the Iraq War, 4/1, Precious, 6/1, the new James Cameron sci-fi Avatar, 7/1, and Quentin Tarantino's violent hit Inglourious Basterds, 14/1. Up in the Air is expected to take other awards too, with Clooney, 4/5, leading a talented field of nominees for best actor, ahead of Jeff Bridges, 7/4, Colin Firth, 11/2, Morgan Freeman, 8/1, and Tobey Maguire, 33/1. Sandra Bullock heads the choices for best actress, listed at a steady 6/4 for the leading role in Blind Side. However, she'll have to beat debutant Gabourey Sibide (Precious, 15/8) and unheralded English woman Carey Mulligan (An Education, 2/1) to claim the prize. Germany looks set to beat other European powerhouses for the best foreign film, with the White Ribbon, 1/2, currently favored ahead of Spain's Broken Embraces, 7/2, France's A Prophet, 6/1, and Italy's Baaria, 8/1. Funny man Steve Martin will return to host the awards for the third time when they are held on March 7 at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, but this time he will do so in conjunction with Alec Baldwin.

Will Norway Reverse Ban on Online Gambling?

Although neighbor Sweden and other nearby countries have gone in one direction by completely legalizing online gambling, Norway - which is not a member of the European Union - has cracked down on its citizens by effectively banning the activity. Follow this link to Online Casino Reports Norway for more on online gambling in Norway. So is there any chance of the Norwegian government reversing the ban sometime soon? Unfortunately, it appears that the answer is probably no. Citizens of the Scandinavian country can currently bet online, but only via the two state gaming companies, Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto, which now offer their games on the internet. But to ensure it was only via those monopolies that Norwegians gambled, the government passed a law in December 2008 similar to the controversial UIGEA law in the United States that prohibited the processing of payments from Norway to unlicensed offshore gambling sites. Such a move, of course, would not have been so easy were Norway a member of the EU. As in the US, the onus is on credit card companies and financial and other institutions to prevent Norwegians from transferring payments to and from remote gambling websites. Despite the ban, there is no guarantee residents of prosperous Norway, which has one of the highest percentages of Internet use in the world, will be perturbed by the ban. A new report from Germany, where online gambling is also effectively banned, has shown that Germans gamble online anyway, in defiance of their lawmakers.

Colts, Chargers, Saints Lead Super Bowl Odds

The regular season is over, the playoffs are set to begin, but just three teams - the Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints - stand out in the betting odds to win next month's NFL Super Bowl. The fact the Colts are still favorites (Ladbrokes, 3.75, William Hill, 4.00) is all the more remarkable given they dropped their last two games after going unbeaten over their first 14. The Chargers, who finished second to the Colts in the AFC with a 13-3 win-loss ratio, go in to the post-season as second favorites (Ladbrokes, 4.50, William Hill, 5.00), while New Orleans (5.00 at both bookmakers) finished top in the NFC and appear to have an easy run straight to the Super Bowl. The main competition for the Saints will come from the Minnesota Vikings, who finished just a game back in the AFC standings and are rated 9.00 odds at Ladbrokes and 10.00 at William Hill. Among the rest of the pack there are only two other realistic contenders - one in the NFC and one in the AFC - but they are clubs that carry big reputations that will make their more favored rivals nervous. The New England Patriots missed out on a golden chance two years ago to win their fourth Super Bowl in a decade, after wasting a perfect 16-0 regular season by giving it all up to the New York Giants at the big dance. The Patriots finished this season with a 10-6 record, but still pose a threat, listed as 15.00 at Ladbrokes and William Hill at 12.00. Likewise the Dallas Cowboys, who were also upset by the Giants in the post-season two years ago, are 11.00 at Ladbrokes and 12.00 at William Hill to make amends this time round and win an equal-record sixth NFL championship. State Legislators Set to Decide on Casinos

Lawmakers in the US states of Kentucky and Delaware are set to deliberate this week on the future of gambling as state legislatures resume business for the start of 2010. Kentucky In Kentucky, legislators will begin discussion Tuesday on a proposal to allow video slot machines at the state's many horse racing tracks. The state is in big financial trouble at the moment with a potential shortfall of $1.5 billion over the next two years, and the gambling proposal could prove more popular with the electorate than the alternative of tax increases. Even Governor Steve Beshear has said he is open to all suggestions to solve the financial worries - a big shift for a man who had become notorious for his fight to seize domain names used by online gambling sites. Delaware In Delaware, lawmakers will discuss allowing for casino expansion. The tiny east coast state is already home to three land-based casinos, and the vote is shaping up somewhat surprisingly as a battle between pro-gambling lawmakers and the existing casinos. The three casinos oppose expansion because their revenue would be affected, but House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf, who is leading the push for casino expansion, says his responsibility is to all the people of Delaware and not just to the existing casinos.
