Groups C and D Winners and Losers Defoe's 22nd minute goal was enough to put a determined England side through to qualification. Although Rooney failed to make the most of his chances the team as a whole showed the famed British Bulldog spirit. Both sides had a chance to survive in the other Group C match but the dying moments of the game saw a US goal that nabbed them the top spot. Having dominated throughout and had multiple attempts on goal the Americans deserved their win over Algeria. In Group D, Mesut Ozil's forceful shot at the one hour mark hit the target and was enough to send Germany through to the final sixteen. Australia were on fire and sunk two past the Serbian defense, winning them a place in the knock outs. The exciting finale to Group C means that England will now face their old enemy Germany in their first game of the knock outs on Sunday, sending tremors of anticipation across both sets of fans. Groups E and F Wind up - But Who'll Get Through? Today's Group F action sees Paraguay, Italy and New Zealand all with the chance of qualification; with a win guaranteeing advancement into the final 16. For Slovakia, a win could only get them through if the other result goes their way and a tie or loss sees them sent off home. The Group F teams therefore promise heartfelt performances and will see all sides writing the end of their own World Cup story. Group E sees a game with two teams at either end of the spectrum - Cameroon are already knocked out of the cup and will want to bow out with pride whereas The Netherlands have already qualified and will go through whatever the result. The fight for second place is between Japan and Denmark. Denmark need to win it to stay in it whereas Japan can get through on just a tie if need be. Japan are one of the tournament's dark horses and favorites to get through to the knockout stage but Denmark turned on the style against Cameroon and have shown what they're capable of. So this one's down to 90 minutes of football and anything could happen. Pundits betting on Slovakia cashed in, while the Kiwis drew level with Paraguay. And those were only some of the highlights in what has been described as an absolute shocker for the Italians. Granted the Slovakians outperformed their opponents with a scintillating display of football that had everyone riveted to their seats. The strikes that sunk Italy were thumped in by Robert Vittek (2 goals) and Kamil Kopunek. In other news, the New Zealanders played a good game against Paraguay but both teams' defences were too strong. The resulting 0 - 0 score line was a fitting end to a tightly contested match. Paraguay joined Slovakia at the top of Group F and both advance to the final 16. The Japanese stunned critics and swept aside a lacklustre Danish side with a 3 - 1 decimation. The Asian tigers certainly looked the part and betting pundits made a pretty penny on their surprising performance. The North Koreans will be reeling from their 7-0 drubbing by Portugal - but will they come back fighting? In other news, the evening will be dominated by two exciting matches. Spain will be squaring off against Chile for a berth in the final 16. Spanish hopes rest on multiple outcomes, given their poor initial showing against Switzerland. The Swiss for their part will be tackling a hungry Honduras side intent on sealing a win. Signs are good for Spain and Chile to advance to the next round. Punters may call this match a dead-rubber contest, but fans are lining up for what promises to be an epic encounter at Durban Stadium today. The game kicks off at 16h00 and referee Archundia of Mexico will be cooling tempers in a blistering game of football. Brazil's superstar Kaka has hammered home his message that Brazil is going all-out for the win, while Portugal's message is equally loud: they're up against it and they're going to get their point to join Brazil in the final 16. Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz realizes what a tall order it will be to defeat the favorites and take pole position in the group. But as it stands, both teams are well-placed to advance to the next round. Brazil is sitting tight on 6 points while Portugal is safely on 4. William Hill Sports provides all the odds in real-time Top sportsbook William Hill clearly shows that Portugal is the underdog going into today's match. Odds for Portugal are standing at 13/5 for a win, while Brazil is seen as the clear favorite at odds of 6/5. The chances of a draw are 2/1. Punters hoping that Portugal can repeat their 7-0 heroics against Brazil will be handsomely rewarded by odds of 300:1 - but the same odds are against Brazil scoring 6-0 or more against Portugal. An unsuspecting punter may be mistaken for thinking that it's even-Stevens, but more than luck is going to determine this outcome. WH Sports has Cristiano Ronaldo as the most likely striker to hammer home Portugal's goals while Brazil's Luis Fabiano and Grafite are almost assured (on paper at least) of being the South American heroes. The different betting types include: draw no bet, double chance, goal markets, corner markets, card markets and 45-minute markets among others. The 16h00 kick-off is going to be the highlight of a super day's play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
American gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson aired the optimism in the gambling industry on Saturday, predicting that the Macau gaming market would grow by 30 percent in the second half of 2010 in comparison to the previous year. "This is not just in comparison with last year, but we also take into account the natural growth of the sector," Adelson said at a press conference in nearby Hong Kong. If the prediction comes true it would be a boon for the global gambling industry, given that Macau recently overtook Las Vegas as number one in the world for gambling revenue. Sands China, which already operates the Venetian Macau, Four Seasons and Sands Macau, plans to open the first phase of its new gaming resort in 2011. The $12 billion complex is being built on the Cotai Strip, a new casino district situated on reclaimed lands between the Taipa and Coloane islands in the south of the tiny former Portuguese colony. Adelson's Las Vegas Sands, which owns Sands China, said last February that the damage from its fourth quarter losses in 2009 was weakened by its successful Macau operations. On a more negative note, Adelson said that the recent move by the Macau government to limit the number of gaming tables would have a major impact on his casino resorts, which cater to both VIP and the regular market, while not affecting competitors who focus solely on the VIP market.
The final day of the Group Stage of the FIFA 2010 World Cup was dominated by draws but also showcased a resurgent Spain taking on a 10-man Chile squad. The day kicked off amidst massive expectation with the Brazil vs. Portugal encounter. That both Group G teams had already assured themselves of a final berth in the Round of 16 was put on the backburner. They went head-to-head in a hard fought contest that was marked by scuffles, ill-temper at times and lots of defensive football. It ended in a surprising 0 - 0 draw. Chile took on Spain in their Group H final match. Both teams pass through into the next round with Spain topping the leaderboard with a classy 2 - 1 victory over their South American counterparts. The match was played with flair and passion and was a deserving victory for the European favourites. North Korea was outgunned by a goal-laden Cote d'Ivoire side to the tune of 3 - 0. But not even that merciless thumping was even to edge the African kings to the Round of 16. Both teams were effectively relegated to the sidelines of the contest. Honduras and Switzerland settled for a goalless draw in their final Group H encounter. Enter the Round of 16 The day kicks off with the 16h00 crunch match between South American giants Uruguay (Group A winners) and the in-form Korea Republic (Group B runners up). This contest is being billed as the most exciting day game of the FIFA World Cup to date. The victors will secure their spot in the quarter-finals of this illustrious event. African hopefuls Ghana will be taking off the gloves as they encounter a resurgent USA side that has shown incredible form of late. At 20h30 both these giants of the football world will do battle at Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng Stadium for a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. USA is looking for a shock victory over the highly skilled Ghanaians, but whose place will be secured is anyone's guess. Austria's National Assembly passed a new gambling law last Wednesday, more than two years after the debate over the legislation began. The new law was widely criticized for being too restrictive, however, with the national gaming trade association, Automatenverband, claiming that it would be disastrous for independent operators. And it was also criticized by several parties in the parliament: the left-wing Green Party, the only party to vote against the law, said it failed to provide the required level of player protection, while the far-right Freedom Party of Austria said it failed to actually regulate online gambling. Under the law, licenses would be harder to attain and there would be strict regulations on where machines are permissible and the amount of machines that can be operated. However, it would open up the whole country to slot machines, where previously they could be operated in only four provinces - the capital Vienna, Styria, Carinthia and Lower Austria. The number of casino licenses was also raised from 12 to 15 under the new law, and stakes and prizes were limited to a maximum input of €10 and a maximum prize of €10,000. Geography also becomes a big factor, with arcade licenses limited to one for every 1,200 people (or one for every 600 in Vienna), and a minimum distance of 15 kilometers between each arcade (or 2km in Vienna). Yesterday's first game of the knockouts saw Uruguay take on South Korea in a lively game that ended with a 2-1 score line. Despite the driving rain and sparsely filled stadium, Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez shone in the international spotlight. He scored both goals, the second a spectacular shot in the 80th minute. Rumors abound of interest in 23 year old Suarez from both Barcelona and Manchester United. The battle between USA and Ghana saw America's chance for revenge against the team that booted them out of the 2006 group qualifiers. The Americans have been a pleasant surprise in South Africa, in contrast to several pedigree footballing nations whose performances have disappointed. They put on a determined performance, albeit a little tetchy in the beginning but gradually gaining confidence and creating chances. A penalty by Donovan pushed the match into extra time, however, after just 3 minutes Gyan's skillful, tight-angled goal separated the two sides and saw the American dream shattered. Almost all of the more than 1,500 land-based Romanian bookmakers closed on June 11 - the first day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup - to protest new legislation that would put a 25 percent tax on all gambling profits. The country's Alliance of Employers union said the protest was aimed at drawing the government's attention to the threat of unemployment and illegal betting posed by the new tax. Romania, which has legalized land-based gambling but has not yet addressed the issue of online gambling in Romania, is home to 1,505 registered bookmakers. Of those, some 1,455 - or more than 96 percent of all registered bookmakers - have joined the strike against the new draft law. Gambling profits were taxed prior to the introduction of the new legislation but to a lesser extent, with the government making around $1.25 million each month from the taxes. According to a union study conducted in Romania, a similar measure undertaken back in 2005 led to a reduction of almost 50 percent in average bookmaker earnings and a reduction of around 30 percent in the number of bookmakers.
The England vs Germany match started out a passionate affair with Germany going two goals up within 32 minutes. The English found some 'Three Lions' spirit and started a fight back, getting a goal in the 37th minute. Within a minute of Upson's goal Lampard appeared to have scored a scorcher but the referee decreed it had not crossed the line, although the replay clearly showed it should have been the equalizer. From that moment, aside from periods of possession and attempts on goal, England's spirit gradually waned and the Germans smelled victory, being particularly successful on counter attacks, with Muller getting two goals in three minutes. The 4-1 score line belied some brave attempts by a deflated England but at the end of the day German efficiency won the game and England departed broken hearted.. The first goal in the Mexico vs Argentina game was also controversial, seemingly delivered from an offside position but still awarded by the ref. Two other Argentinian goals followed, one following a defensive error. The Mexicans got a consolation goal at the end but it was too little too late. There were some good goals in this match but the refereeing blunders in both of today's matches are what will make the back page headlines. Argentina now meet Germany in the quarter finals. Making History The Netherlands enter their showdown with Slovakia feeling confident after scoring maximum points in Group E. On the other hand, Slovakia are still high after defeating Italy and will want to prove themselves as 'giant killers' again. Brazil may not have samba'd their way through to qualification in terms of style but they do gain credit for having had an unbeaten run so far. Chile have played some great football to date and in the words of defender Mauricio Isla, "They (Brazil) are favorites, but we want to change history."
