Gin rummy, or Gin as it is more commonly known, marked its 100th birthday in 2009, and today is just as popular as ever, with enthusiasts even playing for money on the internet. A simple, two-player card game played with a regular pack of 52 cards, the standard version of gin rummy involves several hands, with the winner being the player who reaches 100 points (or a different amount agreed upon before). The objective in each hand is to be first to dispose of all your cards. This can be achieved by picking up and disposing of cards, while combining the cards into what are known as melds. There are several variations of the game, including Gin Rummy, Traditional Rummy, Oklahoma Gin and Kalooki, most of which are available at the plethora of online gaming sites that offer online gin rummy. Rummy Royal, the self titled "home of online rummy games," is one of the best sites in this particular business. It offers all the major versions of the game in both head-to-head and tournament play, and includes lengthy explanation on getting started. You can also learn how to play without betting by using the site's demo versions.
The New Jersey gambling industry has suffered a hit, with Atlantic City's 11 casinos reporting a 22.6 percent fall in gross profits for the second quarter of 2010. Gross operation profits reached just $149 million for the months of April, May and June, down from $192 million for the same period a year earlier, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission said. Net revenues dropped to $922 million in the second quarter, down 5.5 percent from the same period in 2009. What is New Jersey's loss seems to have neighboring Pennsylvania and Delaware's gain. Pennsylvania casinos recorded $211 million in gross slots revenues in July, up 17.8 percent from the previous year, according to figures from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Revenues from table games are set to be announced in the coming days. And in Delaware, gross gaming revenue rose 11.7 percent in July following the recent addition of table games at the state's three casinos. Things are also moving strongly for online casinos, if figures from leading online company PartyGaming are anything to go by. The company recently reported a 26 percent increase in overall revenue for the first half of 2010, mainly on the back of its bingo site, which earned it 25.8 million Euros during that period, up from just 1.2 million Euros during the first half of 2009.
Tiger Woods has been in the news again this week for all the wrong reasons, this time following the completion of his divorce proceedings from Elin Nordegren. Now that the almost year-long saga over Tiger's infidelity has seemingly ended, millions of golf fans will be hoping Tiger returns to his past form - which had him win 14 Majors - and starts winning tournaments with regularity yet again. Woods can begin that mission as early as this week when he takes part in the Barclays PGA Tour event, being held at New Jersey's Ridgewood Country Club from August 26-29. And the current betting odds suggest he can do it, with Tiger equaling fellow American Phil Mickelson as the odds favorite, both paying 14/1 at British bookmaker William Hill. Rory McIlroy is 14/1 to win the tournament, followed by Scott Strickler, 16/1. Last year's winner Heath Slocum is way back at 100/1. If backing the winner isn't your thing, there are many extra betting options too, including top 10 finish, top 5 finish, first round leader, margin of victory and whether the winner will be determined by playoff. If the tournament is half as exciting as last year it will be worth watching. Slocum started it as the 124 seed from 125 players, and edged out Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Steve Stricker to win by just one shot.
The Dutch government appears set to regulate and license online poker, following recommendation from the country's Online Gaming Advisory committee. The six-member committee, which was formed in September 2009 by the Ministry of Justice, said in its report that sports betting, lottery and other forms of gaming are already available under Dutch law, without being a problem. The report added that outlawed forms of online gaming are already in use by Dutch citizens, and that the justice system has not interfered with that. It also suggested that only local poker companies be permitted to target Dutch players, with foreign operators to be blocked by Dutch ISPs. Europe-wide The recommendation follows on from similar moves in other European countries, including France. The French government began issuing online gambling licenses in June, following the passage of a law that ended the long-running state monopoly on the industry. Online poker rooms were among those to benefit the most, with French poker sites ranking well against sites from other countries in traffic rankings released soon after the licenses were issued. Visit OCR's Gambling Legality page for a list of countries and the status of online gambling in their jurisdictions.
Financial betting is a relatively new form of betting that has proven very popular amongst online casino customers in the past few years. Financial betting is essentially a bet on the increase and decrease of shares, Forex or indices. Ladbrokes online offers two forms of financial betting: spread betting and fixed betting. In spread betting, you buy a share price if you think the price of a specific company will go up, or you sell the share price if you think it is decrease. Profits and losses are made depending on whether you are right or wrong. Fixed odds betting is a little different, in that it allows you to bet on whether a specific share will finish above or below a predetermined level. Online Forex betting works similarly, as does trading in oil and gold, which are all available at major online gaming sites, including Ladbrokes, Paddy Power Trader and the Betfair Betting Exchange. Financial betting is exciting because it offers a different form of gaming based more on reality, without actually having to go out and play the real stock market or real financials. Just remember one important thing: that financial betting requires a certain degree of knowledge of financial markets, and therefore carries a higher than usual level of risk. So make sure not to deposit more than you can afford to lose.
Backgammon is one of the oldest board games in the world, but in modern times it has also made its way to the Internet, with millions around the world playing for money. A game that combines skill and chance, backgammon requires you to remove all your 15 pieces off the board before your opponent, with each move determined by the dice, which players take turns to roll. Although the dice introduce a large element of luck into the game, strategy also plays a big part: you can place pieces strategically for the run home, and of course you can hit an opponent's piece if it is standing alone in the position you are moving to. Your opponent must then bring the piece back into the game on the next possible roll. Most of the big online gambling sites offer online backgammon, with several different ways of wagering money. At William Hill Backgammon, to take an example, you can play match play or money play. In match play, two players face each other in one or more games to see who reaches a target score first. In money play, you select a preferred per-point stake and buy-in, and winnings are calculated at the end based on the difference between you and your opponent's score. Several sites, such as Ladbrokes and Gammon Empire, offer tournaments that pit you against number of players. Search the different backgammon sites to see what suits you.
The 2010 US Open tennis tournament gets underway at New York's Flushing Meadows on Monday, and the odds indicate both the men's and women's singles will be tight battles. World number two Roger Federer will be aiming to resume his domination of the tournament he won five consecutive times between 2004 and 2008, with Bwin listing him as 2.25 favorite to win the men's title. His arch-rival Rafael Nadal leads the challengers at 3.35, followed by Andy Murray, 4.75, and Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick, who carry the hopes of American tennis fans at odds of 12.00 and 14.00 respectively. In the specials, Bwin is offering customers the chance to bet on several head-to-head battles, asking which player will finish the tourney in a higher place. The sportsbook is also offering 4.50 odds on Federer and Nadal meeting in the final (Nadal leads 5-2 head-to-head in previous grand slam finals). In the women's tournament, Russian Maria Sharapova, 3.50, just edges out Belgian Kim Clijsters, 3.80, Dane Caroline Wozniacki, 4.50, and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 9.00 for the US Open title. The title is open for the taking given the absence of Serena Williams and Justine Henin, who both will miss due to injury.

Betfair, one of the world's leading online casino and sports book operators, has launched the first betting application designed especially for the new Apple iPad tablet. The application, which is free for customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland via Apple's Applications Store, follows the release in May of Betfair's iPhone application. "Once more, we are pushing the boundaries when it comes to adapting our products to the latest web and technology trends," Betfair spokesman Don Fotsch said. Betfair's push into this area of the industry will no doubt continue to grow, as evidence by news last month that the British-based company has announced it will hire around 100 people with expertise in C++, SQL Server and Java. A wide range of betting applications are already available for Apple's iPhone, and the trend is now moving to the iPad, the tablet computer first released in April 2010. Most of the big online gambling companies offer gambling services on the iPhone that are no different to those available over the Internet on a regular computer. For example, Ladbrokes mobile casino offers access to its games without download, including roulette, blackjack and theme games such as Tomb Raider, Royal Derby, Major Million and Mega Moolah.
