In the shadow of the cricket gambling outrage surrounding the test match between England and Pakistan, Khalid Ali, Secretary General of the European Sports Security Association (ESSA) has been airing his views on match fixing in sport. This is certainly a positive route forward and one in keeping with the ethos of ESSA, who have developed their own measures for European sports that include a code of conduct on sports betting for athletes and industry-leading security measures. Ali agrees with Rogge that match-fixing is a global problem but feels that "licensed, regulated betting operators are doing their utmost to maintain the integrity of sport." He does, however, feel that it is now the turn of the sports industry to be reflective on this issue and come up with a response to the current glut of corruption scandals.
