Clearly, the UK leads all European countries in legalizing, regulating, and bringing respectability to online gambling. Italy, in taking careful yet determined steps towards legalizing its own online gambling industry, is a close second. Three years since setting on liberalizing its policy towards online cash games, a landmark day has arrived. Although most news from Italy seem to involve Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi - "scandal", "women" and the 18-year old Karima El Mahroug, aka "Ruby" are tied to web searches for Berlusconi - March is when online casino and poker cash games are actually legal in the country. The Law The relevant legal decree was published in February 2011, but will be applicable only now. The first sites to offer cash games are made available these days. Online poker, the first to be allowed for cash online, is limited with two major provisions: Online poker satellite and tournaments are allowed up to €250, and At least 90% of the amount collected from players must be paid back. Italy's government charges a 20% tax on gross gaming receipts. The European Market Italy is prepared to tap into the European online gambling industry, estimated at $12.5 billion. Other countries likely to liberalize their laws and join in on the fun are Germany, Spain and Switzerland, among others. With so many different payment options available to customers of online casinos, it can be hard picking which one suits you best. To help, we show you which of the three are most popular, and show you the benefits that each of them offers. We have used data from Sportingbet casino. Credit or Debit Card The most popular payment method for most online gaming customers, credit and debit cards are useful for a variety of reasons, namely: there are generally no added fees for making a deposit online, and registering your card with the casino doesn't require any extra work that purchasing a pre-paid card does. Sportingbet accepts Visa and MasterCard, by far the two most widely-used credit cards in online banking. It also accepts Visa debit card, Switch, Maestro and Laser, meaning you have plenty of options from which to choose. Moneybookers Among one of the world's leading e-wallet payment systems, Moneybookers should attract more customers later in the year when it rebrands itself as "Skrill." Under the new name, Skrill will offer enhanced payment facilities that build on the precedent that has made Moneybookers one of the most used Sportingbet payment methods. Neteller Finally, no list of payment options is complete without a mention of Neteller. An independent online payment method that provides instant deposit and withdrawal capabilities, this one features at most online casinos too.

In a bid to minimise its tax burden, Betfair (BETF.L) has announced that it will relocate part of its business to Gibraltar. The world's largest betting exchange, founded 10 years ago, is not the first to recognise the financial sense of this decision and is following in the footsteps of other industry giants like Ladbrokes (LAD.L) and William Hill (WMH.L). Cutting Costs This move is said to save the gaming company more than 20 million pounds each year as their tax obligation will drop from 16 percent on gross profit from betting to a mere 1 percent. However, the financial benefits are not expect to be felt until 2012 as Betfair will incur higher operational costs during this year while it maintains its existing offices and sets up new ones in Gibraltar. Additionally, despite the move, Betfair has stated that it will continue to pay the British horse racing levy. Change is in the Air It is hoped that the loss of three huge online gaming companies will prompt the British government to reconsider its position with respect to tax and its licensing system. Betfair is also urging the government to revise the "double taxation" situation under current UK tax regulations. This can result in the company paying tax to the local jurisdiction where the customer is based as well as in the UK. Gibraltar Regulatory Authority The move also means that Betfair will now operate under the Gibraltar licensing body called the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. It is known for its strict levels of high standards and is responsible for formulating regulatory policies, assessing new applications for gaming licenses and considering other gambling related issues.
