In Congress, Again

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, tried unsuccessfully to attach an online casino ban to none other than a defense bill but the request was refused on grounds of irrelevancy by Sen. John Warner, the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and his Democrat colleague Sen. Carl Levin. With his colleagues in the Senate showing little appetite for conventionally bringing the measure to the floor this year, Frist attempted to get his proposal through the back door by attaching it to a totally unrelated military authorization bill. It seems that the sites are feeling the heat every single week. Despite the setback, advocates said GOP leaders will keep trying to add a wagering prohibition to must-pass legislation until Congress adjourns this year. This specific course of action began when on September 5th, the day Congress returned from its August recess. Frist made a speech on the Senate floor and listed the ban as one of his priorities as Congress rushes toward adjournment. He is following up on the will of many, including the Department of Justice, who believe internet gambling is illegal. Despite ongoing efforts, the $12 billion industry continues to grow, with more than 2,300 Web sites.

Casino on Trial Basis in Holland

The first stages of the Ministers attempts are bearing fruit with the Lower House Parliament giving its support to a reasonable two year trail period license for online gaming sites. The idea is to give an exclusive for the trial license only to one Dutch casino, the state owned Holland casino ensuring it's monopoly to be the only gambling establishment to be recognized and legally permitted by the government. It is presumed that an estimated 300,000 people enjoy online gaming sites, hence a government would do wisely to utilize this great opportunity and direct the gamblers towards one site to the benefit of their country. The Dutch are known for considering the benefits of being lenient on controversial issues, hoping that legalizing something takes away half of its appeal. So does the Dutch Minister, who claims that if the trial period results in a higher number of gamblers, the trial would be thought of as unsuccessful. The new site will be open to the wide public, limiting only the problematic age group of 18-23 by a weekly wagering amount of 100 euro. Gambling groups in other European countries maintain that the Dutch monopoly doesn't take in account the European free trade agreement. The Dutch government doesn't consent to that, and like most governments is trying to give close attention to their own countries interests.

For Sheer Entertainment

Tiger Woods may consider filing a lawsuit against a certain magazine following the magazine's claim that his wife posed nude for porn websites. That is hardly something to pass you by, especially if you're a world wide celebrity with the entire world pointing at you. Gamblers can put wagers as to whether Woods will decide to go through with a lawsuit. So, as you enjoy hearing the recent gossip with entertainment news nosing into Woods' personal life, there is in fact some profit to gain from winning this bet. Who said you ca only play blackjack and roulette?! The life of a celebrity is not only a source of great entertainment but also brings gamblers a more innovative avenue to bet on. Of course our favorite hobby may not be as thrilled by that notion. Tom Cruise may sympathize with him. If you're a Cruise fan then you would probably support his side when the media started questioning the existence of his little baby girl. Hopefully, you also put a wager on that online before the baby photo was plastered all over the newspapers. However, it's not all that bad when it comes to the celebrity and gambling mix. The sites do offer some milder wagers to follow. One asks gamblers if they think that Lindsay Lohan would travel to Iraq and perform for US troops some time this year. The question is clearly harmless, and Lindsay herself may just be flattered by the mention of her name. This wager however promises none of the outrageous ingredients as in wagers mentioned earlier making a wager far more inviting to participate in. Wagering topics, similar to entertainment news items, need to be shocking and perhaps even just a tad offensive to really grab our attention. Hopefully Hollywood celebs can handle it with humor. After all, it's all for the sake of good entertainment.

Paying a Cut

A payout percentage is the amount of money that the house takes in as bets that is then given back as wins. For instance, if it advertises a payout percentage of 98%, then that means that for every $100 taken in, $98 is given directly back to the customers in the form of a payout, meaning cash. The sites can offer better payout percentages than most land based casinos since they have much less additional expenses than their land based counterparts. This means that a website can offer different treats such as bonuses and other attractive perks. It is of course not surprising then, that they have fewer problems staying afloat in the competitive world of the industry. The payout percentage is important to players because this information allows them to identify which venue has a greater percentage of people winning at it, and obviously this gives players a better overall chance of bagging a win of their own. Most casinos offer specific sections dedicated to showing players what the payout percentages are for each game, and knowing these facts, together with the right amount of skill and luck, are sure to get gamblers rolling in the cash.

Borgata Changes the Scene

It's been a while since Atlantic City embarked on an endeavor involving a serious investment in building some new casinos in the region, but finally, the first in 13 years was built there, and there was much talk about showing Vegas who the real deal is when it comes to the gambling business. Today, months after the opening, there are billions of dollars in development in Atlantic City, and credit goes to the "Borgata effect" as the primary catalyst for change. Back then, Las Vegas, the older and more developed sibling had become more of a tourist destination and perfect for families. Of course gambling was the name of the game and that was the reason Vegas was, and still is more popular and profitable than ever. But the Borgata enterprise wished to finally claim back Atlantic City's days of glory and transform its image from the place people go when they cannot afford to visit their favorite venues in Vegas, to a place where one can wine, dine, dance, golf and gamble. It was all about creating a new and improved gambling environment. The Borgata turned out to be Atlantic City's king and winning card. The complex sports 300-thread-count sheets, gold-tinted exterior windows and 13 Dale Chihuly glass chandeliers around the hotel. Boyd Gaming and MGM Mirage have spent $1.1 billion on the new casino which holds the recently opened Bobby Flay Steak, Wolfgang Puck's American Grille and Michael Mina's Seablue, as well as 11 other restaurants, Spa Toccare, and a 161,000-square-foot building that includes Atlantic City's largest poker room. Together with their 43 stories and 2000 rooms, they have become largest hotel in New Jersey and have proved that the investment was a wise one.

Cryptologic Moves to Europe

In order to gain strategic flexibility, Cryptologic is sending its top ranking employees to an office in Ireland, while the rest of Cryptologic's software development staff will stay in their current location, Toronto. Although the company is following the US crackdown on the industry closely, they are insisting that the move has little to do with it. The move has to do with relocating to a country that offers a gaming-friendly environment and will provide the company with a wider range of marketing support and brand management services, not to mention the proximity to their major customers.Cryptologic, which focuses mainly on the industry, sells software that include table and slot machine games, player-to-player poker, and an electronic cash management system. Starting in January 2007, Cryptologic will adopt London's Alternative Investment Market as its primary stock exchange while maintaining its listings on Toronto and NASDAQ markets.

Sport Themed Innovations

Combining the fun and love of sports with online gambling sites is bound to bring more clientele to the sites, in particular such gamblers that are also enthusiastic sports fans. 888 operates in two areas. Adding sports themes to the games and focusing marketing efforts through sponsoring big sports events. The season of 2006/2007 will be the 888 year at French league football as three clubs will enjoy a generous sponsorship of the company, wearing its logo on their jerseys as well. It is not to say that the popular site is mainly dealing with sports bets as all the favorite traditional games are in wide offer. This site also shares many of the general themes you can find on the net with some unique added touches, naturally. The new sports themed video slot machine games released are sure to be popular. Top Spin Snooker relates to the 888 sponsored World Snooker Championship while the Goals slot machine game offers more of a hyped full of action football game. Another great feature in these particular slots is that you can start your bet for as little as 5 cents per line. Naturally high rollers will be happy to bet for $10 and enjoy the immense potential that the nine active pay lines per game provide gamblers.

Poker Giant is Mac-Friendly

Party Poker has decided to take a certain risk, and has announced the availability of a Mac compatible download and a browser based application to empower Mac players. The Beta version is up and running but there are some drawbacks. The version is not complete and at this time there is no capability for multi-table or sit and go tournaments, but cash games are available. Other features, such as making notes on other players, hand histories and the like are not up to speed yet, and there have been time lag reports involving Java based browsers used by Linux users. These are all issues that are being urgently addressed, as Party Poker looks to set a Mac-friendly example for the rest of the sites out there. To run Party Poker's all-access version, all players need to do is download the software. The access for Windows, Mac and Linux systems are all available, but to run the browser based versions, you have to have Windows IE 5 or better, Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or better or Safari 1.3 or better. Java versions supported include Microsoft JVM, Sun JDK 1.4 or 1.5, IBM JDK or MRJ 2.2.5 for Mac users. Others must prepare for some beta versions for Mac users as well, as it has been clear for quite a while, that the world in fact does not revolve around Microsoft.

The Good and the Bad; No Ugly

When online casinos first hit the web back in the mid to late 90s, few people tried them out. Today things are a bit different, there are so many online casino sites to choose from, that it sometimes seems that there are as many providers as there are players on the web. This of course is not the case, but still, regardless of where you look on the web, you are bombarded with online gambling ads. So, with so many sites to choose from, where do you start? Recently, one site stated that it was leaving the world of online gambling, whether this was due to bankruptcy or just straight out loss in the competition is not really clear, but how do you make certain that you avoid these potentially lesser casinos? Luckily, there is a trick that will help you avoid these bad sites. When you are out on the web searching for a new site to play at, there are two things that you should look for. The first one is a watchdog certification, either eCOGRA or OPA. Both of these watchdogs ensure that the site you play at is safe and quite popular amongst players across the globe. The second thing you should keep your eye out for is the type of software that the company uses, if it is a software provider that you have never heard of, chances are this is a two bit casino that won't last all too long, so keep on looking!
