World Number One and clear Wimbledon favorite Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for the tennis world's most coveted grand slam title when he enters Center Court to take on unseeded German hopeful Florian Mayer in the first round this afternoon.

Djokovic goes in as an almost unbackable favorite to win his first round matchup, but the surprise events of day one should serve as a reminder that nobody is invincible - the Serb's main challenger at Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal, was yesterday knocked out of the tournament by 135 th -ranked Steve Darcis.

Unlike Darcis, Mayer is actually a fairly well-known opponent, boasting a career high ranking of 18 th in the world (2011). The 29-year-old is currently ranked 34 th and has made it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals twice before - in 2004 and 2012. All this suggests he will be no pushover for Djoka.

William Hill's pre-match betting has Djoka at 1/100 and Mayer at 16/1, but these were similar odds to yesterday's Nadal-Darcis game. Djokovic has firmed to evens in Hill's Wimbledon title betting, leading Andy Murray, 9/4 and Roger Federer, 4/1. All other contenders are 25/1 or over.
