The US Open reaches its final stages with some terrific performances by players, as Serbia's Novak Djokovic meets Japan's Kei Nishikori today for the men's semifinals at 5pm UK time.

Djokovic Coveting Consecutive Grand Slam Win

Djokovic is a known history-maker, and this time had made it to his 8th consecutive US Open semi-final. The Serb fought a hard battle against longtime rival and strong competitor Andy Murray. Murray fought valiantly in the first two sets, managing to rally from breakdowns, but it was a tough physical battle in which Murray lost and Djokovic's astonishing stamina won with 7-6(1), 6-7(1) 6-2, 6-4 on the scoreboard.

Djokovic is really keen on taking the US Open to complete a consecutive Grand Slam title win after he took Wimbledon in July. Ahead of his meeting with Nishikori, Djokovic said: "He’s a very talented player who has been Top 10. He’s very fast all over the court and serves well for his height. I’m expecting a tough one."

Nishikori's Japanese History

Kei Nishikori made Japanese sports history as he became the first Japanese man to make it to the US Open semi-finals since Ichiya Kumagae did that back in 1918. Nishikori played an epic match against Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday. After 4 hours and 15 minutes, the Japanese won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 6-4. There was another bit of history in that match, as Nishikori took the title of the first player who won at the US open after playing past 2am in his previous matched, as he finished at 2:26am Tuesday morning after beating Milos Raonic.
