The season has not been going as planned for either Hamburg, nor for Schalke. After a winless start of 12 matches, Hamburg looked as if they were ready to break out with eight points from four matches, but a bad loss at the hands of FSV Mainz left them in 17th place in the league with only 10 points.
Schalke has not been a lot better. They are still in the bottom half of the league and without a win in their last three league games. They hope to end the year on a high note and beat HSV. They have just one single loss in their last seven meetings and the Royal Blue have high hopes about tonight.
Injury Report
Hamburg are almost at 100% ahead of tonight's match. Rene Adler is out to injury, but he is the sole player. Lewis Holtby is out on suspension and Alen Halilovic is not expected to play.
For Schalke, they are without a big part of their team. Breel Embolo, Coke, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Franco Di Santo and Matija Nastasic are all injured. Naldo is out on a suspension. Atsuto Uchida and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are also expected not to play. These injuries and suspensions could be a major thorn in Schalke's side, but they are the better team and they have been excellent against Hamburg in the past.
