Copa del Rey Second Leg: Atletico Madrid vs Rayo VallecanoPublished January 14, 2016 by Sol FH
The second leg of the round of 16 gets underway tonight from Madrid as league leaders Atletico shoot to oust Rayo. Match starts at 19:30 GMT.
La Liga league leaders Atletico Madrid will host the second last team on the Spanish table, Rayo Vallecano at Vicente Calderón stadium this evening. The winner of tonight's match will move on to the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey and that much closer to the championship.
Diego Simeone has taken his team to the top of the Spanish league over top tier teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have been incredible this season and have beaten virtually every team in the league, except for three slip-ups on the way. They are running through the Copa del Rey and not looking back, attempting to win a final, after having last won in 2013's epic victory against Real Madrid 2-1. With Real Madrid out of this year's tournament already in the last round, Atletico's chances are better than ever to take the title.
Rayo is the exact opposite of Atletico this season in La Liga, and their second-to-last position in the league standings is more than enough proof. Rayo manager Paco Jemex is leading his squad on a depressing path, not having secured a win in their last eight matches. They did manage to hold onto a home-draw in the first leg of the round of 16, but tonight they face Atletico at home, and Madrid have been stunning at Calderon.
If Rayo loses tonight, and I am very sure that they will, if will spell the end to their season and possible the end to Jemex at the helm.
Atletico are almost at full strength ahead of the match, minus the obvious injuries to Tiago (broken leg) and striker Fernando Torres (ankle), whom fell during the week. Rayo are without much of their talent with Razvan Rat in need of an operation, both goalkeepers David Cobeno and Tono are out but they were not needed in the 1-1 draw in the first leg, as Juan Carlos filled in for Yoel, which is what will happen tonight.
