Navigating Curaçao's Licensing Reform
The gaming industry in Curaçao is currently experiencing a pivotal transition, stirring attention and speculation within the online gambling community. As the industry awaits stabilization in September 2024, Slotegrator offers an insightful analysis of the ongoing developments surrounding the Curaçao gaming license.
Introducing the LOK
December 2023 saw the introduction of the National Ordinance for Games of Chance (LOK) to the Curaçao parliament, marking the beginning of a comprehensive legislative review. Finance Minister Javier Silvania, in a January 11 statement, highlighted the LOK's potential to spark extensive parliamentary debate. Amidst circulating rumors, Silvania emphasized the importance of sourcing licensing regulation information directly from the Curaçao Gaming Control Board or the Ministry of Finance to avoid misinformation.
Transitioning Licensing Processes
The current licensing procedure under the NOOGH will remain effective until March 31, 2024. Post this date, new licensing methods will take precedence. The Gaming Control Board (GCB) has initiated the renewal of all gaming licenses, setting the expiration of the first renewal in August 2025 and the last in January 2025.
Enhancing Credibility with Digital Seals
A notable advancement is the introduction of a unique digital seal on January 1, 2024, for online casinos holding a Curaçao license. Developed by the GCB, this digital stamp aims to thwart attempts by online casinos to misrepresent their licensing status. However, only operators who complete the GCB's registration process will be eligible to display this seal.
The First Direct License Issuance
February 2024 marked a milestone with the GCB issuing its inaugural direct license to White Star, part of the Rhino Entertainment Group, for their CasinoDays platform. This development signifies a new era in Curaçao's licensing regime.
Grandfathering Existing Sublicensees
Operators holding existing sublicenses can breathe a sigh of relief as they are expected to be transitioned into the new system with a 12-month provisional license. This grace period allows them to align with the upcoming regulatory changes.
A Pillar of iGaming Integrity
Curaçao's reputation as a licensing authority is unparalleled, having issued gaming licenses since 1996. The license is synonymous with security, credibility, and a proven track record, contributing significantly to the integrity of the global iGaming ecosystem.
