Denmark Gambling Shows Growth for 2015Published March 11, 2016 by Lee R
Sports betting and online gambling are driving growth in the expanding Danish online gambling market.
The good news around the globe for revenues in 2015 continues.
This time, Denmark's figures are in, with the gambling sector showing an increase of 7.7% in 2015, with betting and casino gaming jumps driving growth.
The preliminary figures from Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden indicate that total gross gambling revenue for 2015 reached DKK8.4 billion (€1.1 billion/$1.2 billion), more than doubling the entire growth for the previous three years. Between 2012 and 2014, growth was just 3.3%.
The big jump in sports betting and online gambling was a full 21%, reaching DKK910 million in the final quarter of 2015. Online gambling showed a further increase of 14% to DKK2.03 billion over the course of the year, in a country where where online casinos such as Captain Cook's Casino, EU Casino and 888 Casino are popular.
Online Casino Warming Trend
The 25% jump in online casino revenue to DKK 350m marked the fourth consecutive quarter topping 20% growth. The growth rate for 2015 doubles the average quarterly growth of around 10% in 2014.
The only drop was in online poker revenue, which continued a dipping trend, falling slightly year-on-year in 2015 to DKK165. The figure was a good 25% less than 2012, the year of the launch of the regulated gambling market in Denmark.
As far as land-based performance, a 6% Q4 drop-off at the country's seven licensed casinos to DKK80m in Q4 did not the yearly totals too badly, with the final tally for 2015 rose still safely up almost 5% to DKK340m. Betting was the largest Q4 gainer, jumping 32% to DKK 560m.
The significant growth in licensed online gambling operator revenue has to be the most telling message in these figures. The continuing trend of worldwide signs of growth for 2015 across all regulated markets clearly indicates that effective adaptation is indeed taking place.
