Europa League Semifinal Leg 1 Preview: Man. U Vs. Roma
Published April 29, 2021 by Sol FH
Manchester United hosts Roma tonight at Old Trafford in the first leg of their semifinal matchup at 20:00 GMT.
Manchester United and Roma have faced off an incredible six times before in European competitions. United has only lost on one occasion, winning four and drawing once. All of the previous meetings were in the UEFA Champions League and this will be the first time they meet in the Europa League.
At Old Trafford, Roma has not done well, losing all three of their previous away matches, therein. United is on point when at home against Italian competitors losing only 1 out of their last 12 against Italians.
There was a bit of drama after The Red Devils beat Granada in the last round as United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had mentioned that he "had not seen too much of" Roma.
"That was straight after the game," Solskjaer commented.
"With all the games we've had I was just relieved that we'd gone through.
"Of course I've watched them but I hadn't analyzed and hadn't seen them in-depth to give them enough respect probably with analysis.
"I could've said, which I truly mean, 'it's a fantastic club with a great history. I know about the history, I know about the quality."
Solskjaer also mentioned that it would be a "dream come true" to win a major trophy as the United manager.
United have lost all of their four semi-finals that they have played in under Solskjaer in the past 18 months.
In fact, Solskjaer hasn't won a trophy since the 2013 Norwegian Cup with Molde.
"It will be a dream come true the day I lift a trophy with this club as a manager," he commented. "Our ambition is to finish the season by lifting a trophy. I know how much that would mean to this group going forward."
