Gamblers are fuming over reports that Senator Bob Goodlatte, arguably the industry's toughest new opponent, received a letter congratulating him for his efforts from EBay executive Brian Bieron.
EBay's subsidiary company PayPal is currently attempting to generate business from Europe's gaming industry a move that many players view hypocritical in light of EBay's support for anti-gambling legislation.
According to reports, Bieron's March 14th letter to Goodlatte commended the industry's opponent for introducing "commonsense legislation" to combat illegal gambling in the US. The letter also stated that the most effective solution to banning gaming would be to give law enforcement agencies the power to prosecute players who participate in online gaming.
Despite the views of its parent company, PayPal has signed deals in recent months with two online casino firms to provide full payment services. PayPal's European division also began permitting Bet Fair customers to deposit and withdraw funds via its online service. In March, PayPal Europe announced the same services for Ladbrokes customers. So far Bieron has not commented publicly on his support Senator Goodlatte's proposed legislation.
