William Hill paid out big in weekend football betting, but Arsenal saved them from despair.
William Hill paid out seven figures to punters following a weekend in which almost all the English Premier League favorites won, but avoided an even bigger payout as Arsenal slumped to battlers Norwich.
Bookies Dodge Payout
The leading British betting operator avoided a seven-figure payout as Arsenal continued their disastrous start to the season by slumping to Norwich. After the favourites won in seven other Premier League matches on the weekend, the Gunners blew a golden chance to become number eight.
"We obviously had large payouts as the three o'clock matches finished, but the Arsenal match was the big one," William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said. He added that the number of accumulators running onto Arsenal was "ridiculous," and while Hill had lost over the entire day, it would have been worse if not for Norwich.
Premier League Odds
Manchester City remains William Hill's odds leaders in the Premier League title betting, commanding 7/4 odds. The four other realistic contenders in odds terms are Man Utd, 2/1, Chelsea, 11/4, Arsenal, 12/1, and Tottenham, 50/1.
Norwich eased slightly to 8/11 in the relegation battle, with Reading, 8/11, and Southampton, 5/6, considered the other likely contenders. Of the two unbeaten teams, Chelsea are 4/9 favorites to lose first, while premiership favourite Man City is 13/8. Chelsea is 10/1 to go unbeaten and Man City is 8/1 to achieve the feat.
