With Martin Scorsese off the remake for The Gambler; Does new director Todd Phillips have what it takes?
The Gambler, a 1974 film about an English professor, with a gambling addiction whom loses himself in the world of debt and chance, was set to be remade by Martin Scorsese, as earlier reported. Scorsese, who directed Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and the Departed has been turned over to be remade by Todd Phillips; Phillips is known for The Hangover, Frat House, and Old School.
There was a time when a story was centered on drama and performance instead of slapstick amusement. The Gambler was set in a time of nuance and grandiosity while the classics of today are centered around simple-minded wit; so the questions remains; Is Todd Phillips the right choice in turning a classic of yesterday into a classic of today? Fans of the classic picture are hoping, yes.
