The Paddy Power Gold Cup chase is run on Cheltenham's Old Course over a distance of about 2 miles and 4.5 furlongs (4,124 meters). Last year's total prize purse was £160,000 with jockey Richie McLernon and trainer Jonjo O'Neill taking £91,120 after their six year old Johns Spirit won.

Johns Spirit, now one year older, was reported to be in tip-top shape ahead of the chase today. The horse had already shown its liking for Prestbury Park when it finished fourth of 23 in the Byrne Group Plate at the racecourse. Some tough competitors who could scoop the prize include the six year old Present View which had a very good racing year and the nine year old Oscar Whisky.
