Horse Racing: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Rides TodayPublished July 23, 2016 by Florin P
With last year’s champion, Postponed, ruled out, everything is open in today's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2016 (4:30 p.m UK Time).
One of the most anticipated horse racing competitions of the year, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes starts on Saturday at 4:30 p.m UK time. The Group 1 flat horse race is run at Ascot and brings together the best jockeys and horses in United Kingdom. Commonly referred to as King George, was formed in 1946 and is now one of the richest events in Britain, second only to Epsom Derby. The winning horse receives an automatic invitation to participate in the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the same year.
Postponed Ruled Out
The biggest favorite for the chase and last year's champion, Postponed, was ruled out due to an infection, much to the dismay of punters and horse racing enthusiasts. With Postponed out of the race, Highland Reel and Darthmouth seem to be the strongest contenders, with bet365 sports offering odds of 9/4 on both.
Three Challengers for the Trophy
After the convincing result of 2015, Darthmouth emerged victorious at Chelmsford and Chester. It managed to extend its unbeaten run at Hardwicke Stakes and Sir Michael Stout found it worthwhile to supplement him. His recent victory over Highland Reel explains why the bookmaker credits him with a better chance. The third favorite for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Wings of Desire is priced 4/1. Wings of Desire made his debut in April at Newmarket’s Craven. Of all participating horses, this one shows most promise and there is definitely value. Risk-averse punters might want to stick to Highland Reel and Darthmouth.
Other contenders include Erupt with 9/2, Sir Isaac Newton with 14/1, Western Hymn with 20/1, and Second Step with 33/1. Perhaps Postponed's unexpected absence will bring some unexpected results and performance in the chase? it remains to be seen today at Ascot.
