ASA bans ad showing a woman, pool-side, in a bikini.
An ad for online poker site 888 that appeared on television in the UK on October 8, 2011, was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The ad showed a man turning on a webcam on his computer. The computer screen showed a virtual poker table at 888poker, and other players logging in to play at the table. Among the other players were a group of three women waving at him, as well as a woman lying poolside in a bikini.
The ad was challenged by a viewer for linking online poker with sexual success.
ASA's assessment concluded that the voiceover, which says "You never know who you might meet at a poker cam table" crossed the line, although the innovative aspect of playing poker with webcams was innovative, and could in fact be played through a number of different settings and characters.
The removal of sunglasses by the bikini lady, the tilt of her head, and movement of her shoulders were excessively flirtatious and seductive.
Other 888 ads were banned by the ASA in the past: one ad failed to make clear that customers were required to wager a specified amount in order to redeem winnings; two other ads (for 888Ladies) exaggerated the value of the cash prize actually awarded to winners.
