Italian Online Gaming Options Grow

Italy's online gambling market is where all the opportunities are right now, as demonstrated by the announcements made this week by two different operators - Paddy Power and Prima Networks.

Irish-based online bookmaker Paddy Power said Monday that it will expand its Italy operation, in order to continue from the success of last year's business success. Paddy Power's revenues increased 17 percent to almost half-a-billion euros last year, mainly due to a stand-out year in its UK and Irish online business.

Prima Networks agreed to a deal this week with Tarricone Holding Group to supply a new Italian online casino under the domain name Betflag.it. Tarricone is already known for being behind leading Italian gaming brand Totosi, which was eventually sold to Lottomatica in 2008.

Betflag will feature a sportsbook and online casino, utilizing Prima's QuickFire software. Betflag.it is licensed by Italian gaming regulation authority AAMS, while its general domain name Betflag.com is operating under a Maltese license.

Most of the big names in online gambling have either signed deals to enter the Italian gambling market, or are in the process of negotiating them. And this is good news for Italian players too, as the better the competition the better the product they end up receiving.

Consumer groups are hoping Italy can quickly sort out the remaining problems with its gambling legislation. The European Court of Justice last month questioned whether the country was restricting foreign operators from obtaining licenses. The news of Paddy Power and Prima Networks shows some progress is being made though.
