Italy the Clear Online Gambling Frontrunner

Altogether, Italy's gambling sector nets state almost €10 billion.

A report published by the AAMS gaming authority of Italy reveals: Italy is the top online gambling market in Europe.

Italy's online gaming market was a €3.4 billion business in 2009, but has grown to €4.8 billion last year. These figures precede the changes introduced in Italy with all that regards online casinos and online poker sites, taking place in 2011. Safe to say that in 2011 revenues are expected to grow even more.

Gambling in general, the AAMS report shows, has reached a turnover of over €61 billion last year. This figure too is an increase of 13 percent over 2009.

Online Gambling in Italy

Starting January 1, 2011, and to be introduced gradually over the year, Italy will legalize and regulate online gambling in the country.

Whereas online poker tournaments were legal and cash games banned, online poker and online casinos will be introduced in the coming months. (Online poker cash games in March; online casinos in summer.)

William Hill and other online gambling companies are already in process for obtaining licenses to operate in the country.

Needless to say these additions will boost overall sums, turnovers, and revenues even higher.

About the AAMS

The AAMS stands for: Amministrazione autonoma dei monopoli di Stato. It is the Independent Administration of State Monopolies.

The AAMS has acquired state functions in 2002 and has since acted as regulator and controller of the entire gaming industry.
