It's Time to Educate against Match FixingPublished May 27, 2013 by OCR Editor
Match fixing has plagued sports of all kinds for far too long and there are now people taking steps to squash it at the source.
Match fixing is one of the worst things in sports. You go to a game expecting to see top athletes battling it out with all of their hearts and souls only to discover later that a players or in some cases coaches have lost or messed with the game intentionally. The Federation of Player Associations in Europe which represents over 25,000 athletes held a three day seminar last week educating against match fixing. This seminar is part of an on-going multi-year program by the European Commission and the European Licensed Online Betting Industry working together to educate professional athletes and others in the wide world of sports about the integrity of sports betting.
"Match-fixing is a complex problem with many sides to it. But one very important element that the European Commission focuses on in our efforts to tackle match-fixing is prevention. In this respect, educational programs and awareness raising campaigns can have a significant impact by reaching those most at risk of being approached to fix matches - the athletes themselves. I therefore very much look forward to the results of the project lead by EU Athletes and the European online betting industry," related Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for sport.
The seminar was based on a number of issues and participants heard from the police, representatives from the online betting industry and former professional athletes covering a number of topics:
- Know the rules of your sport relating to betting
- It is safest to never bet on your own sport
- Be careful about handling sensitive information
- Fixing any part of an event is an absolute No-No
- Report any approaches
- Fixers will be caught: Suspicious bets are monitored
Sports are one of the ways that good people can make honest money through one of the many online sportsbooks in the world. To make a bet on a match that has been fixed takes everything away from the experience.
